I have been asked quite often (especially lately) how much of my success can I attribute to being coached by the Mike Ferry Organization.  My answer is below:

I have been selling Real Estate for over 18 years.  I have been in One on One for about a year.  I can honestly say that my success was not a direct result of coaching.  However, I can say that I believe I would've been burnt out this year (2007) without it.  Coaching has taught me to seek balance (among other things), which I desperately needed.

One of my greatest accomplishments through my coaching sessions is developing the mindset necessary to carry me through the troubled waters of a declining market.  I've never seen a market like the one we are currently experiencing.  Over the last 18 years, the market hasn't always been "rosy", but it's been mostly stable.

The most important point I can make in regards to coaching is that there are SO many levels of participation available.  Not only through the Mike Ferry Organization, but other fabulous coaching/personal development opportunities as well.  Each individual should analyze their strengths & weaknesses, then find the appropriate level of guidance or motivation they personally need.

I was in real estate 17 years before I decided I needed guidance. Truthfully, my ego kept me from allowing anyone else to delve into my business & make suggestions for improvement.  My biggest regret with all honesty, is waiting so long.  I can only imagine the quality of life I could've had if I'd been aligned with this incredible coaching organization sooner.

Some people say that "Coaching is not for everyone".  I personally believe it is for everyone.  Each person must decide for themselves the appropriate level of coaching they need & the timing in which they are prepared to accept it into their business & their lives.

Think of all the most amazing athletes you know.  They all have coaches.  Many have more than one.  Do you think Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods would ever tell you that they could do what they do, without the guidance of a coach?  I hardly think so.

"When the student is ready, the teacher will appear", by Calvin Sims.  How true it is.

Can you give us a specific example of something you added to the mix of what you already knew and did, that came directly from the coaching?

Ardell:  The best example I have is something that I did to build my business (18 years ago) & then neglected as time went on.  PROSPECTING.  I had become complacent because I have such a FABULOUS referral base from past clients.  Prospecting is once again a part of my daily schedule & the rewards are tremendous.  It feels so much better to EARN new business than it does to BUY new business. (at least for me).

I have used coaches or mentors throughout my life, the role of the coach depends on where you are in your journey, and your perception of the outcome........

 - a favourite quote comes from Ralph Waldo Emerson "

My chief want in life is someone who shall make me do what I can.

Mike:  One on One is a 1 year commitment at $1,000 per month.  There are other ways of participating for less $$, but this is the Mercedes of coaching with the Mike Ferry Organizaiton.

Financially speaking, in my first year - I have received/closed 3 referrals from the Mike Ferry referral network that will pay for 2 years of coaching.

Cool, I am not ready to commit to that level , but I am getting mentoring from a very experienced agent now, it really does help...If I am successful on this mentoring, I might have more in splits than I would your way, but the difference is I get pretty constant one on one direction face to face..I wish you all the best.good luck     Mike Norvell Sr

Sue, I think this is a great post.  I really like your point of view.  I have looked into a couple of coaching programs but the expense is a little steep right now.  My ideal coaching would be one that would allow you to pay as you have results but that's just in my little mind because I have not found a company like that yet.  LOL

Kimberly:  You know, I have always thought that there should be a program where you pay based on results.  After all, as agents we can spend a lot of time & effort selling a home, but if it doesn't sell we don't get paid do we?

The challenge of course is - what if the coach is giving a student everything they have & the student doesn't make an honest effort.  How would you gauge their performance, you know?

In the meantime, keep learning, exploring & growing.  You'll be fine!

You are a lot more dilimatic than I would have been to the questions :).  Sorry, don't have time for someone wanting to pay after they get results.  That's like wanting a healthy body and will start excersing after you get fit!  I was at fist excited to see a MFO group on active rain...not sure after reading the responses to your post?  I've been in real estate since 1976, and did it without Mike for 19 years.  Did aroun 70 deals with no assistant and worked 24/7.  I've been in one on one for 16 years, average 200 deals a year, my highest was 250, more inportantly I can now only work 1/2 days, and 5-6 months a year, and still make a million a year.  The small amount of money I have paid Mike over the years was made up in total my fist year in one on one.  Yes his system works, if you do!  Yes it is worth every penny, Mike always gives you more value than you pay him.  Hope to see you in San Deigo in Jan.  Liz Carter

Liz:  While I agree that Mike provides value far beyond his fee, I do believe that everyone decides for themselves the degree of continuing education/coaching that is right for them, not to mention the timing.  Just as you said, you succeeded for 19 years without Mike.  I suceeded for 16 without Mike.

While I am grateful that I have chosen the Mike Ferry Organization to guide me in my business, I recognize that not everyone is ready mentally, emotionally or financially to make that commitment depending on the stage of their career.

Having said that, I wish each and every one of them the level of success that only they can choose for themselves.

Is Mike Ferry Organization still in business....I heard that they weren't.

Something about leaving California for Nevada over some tax issue.....I read that on the other blog...

Steven:  They are definitely still in business, better and stronger than ever.  This is the kind of market that those in MFO will thrive in!!

I don't know anything about any tax issues, although Las Vegas is definitely "tax friendly" compared to many states, so I can see why they would move their business for that reason.

Joining 1:1 coaching was the best thing that I ever did for my career.  They have helped me build the skills & mindset to survive in this market and be able to help my clients acheive their goals!

With so many negative factors bombarding us right now in real estate, it is essential to have a constant stream of good news/encouragement and that it what MFO provides right now.  Some one saying, this is what it is going to take to survive this market, here is a plan, now go out and do it!

WOW....here is the post...
<!--ADDED-->

Rhymes With Ferry

A couple of things. First, the largest real estate company in Arizona (based on number of agents) is now Homesmart. Homesmart was already pretty damn big but on Tuesday it was finalized - they bought Dan Schwartz Realty. Dan Schwartz Realty was, itself, was already one of the top 3 companies in the state for number of agents. So was Homesmart. It is my understanding that - at least for now - both companies will continue to operate with their current names.

A Little Bird Told Me

And now for the “big” news. I’ve just received a report that Mike Ferry’s coaching business is falling off. Big time. I have long considered him a predator, so I am happy to hear this. His company has had a pattern of high pressuring agents (who attend his free seminars) to sign up for coaching. Coaching is pretty much all he really sells - his events being a giant sales pitch for getting coached by his organization. For those who don’t follow the Mike Ferry coaching advice or who find it unworkable they are in for an additional shock, besides not having all that additional income they were sure to get. If they attempt to cancel their relationship they discover - as they have signed a contract - their account will be turned over to a collection agency.

It now happens that the state of California (EDD) recently ruled that all the coaches (I think he has averaged about 60 coaches at any given time since 1999) he has been paying as independent contractors are legally employees. Mike appealed and lost. Prediction: a big fine will soon be levied by California and I’m guessing the IRS will soon do the same. Also, from the very same little bird: a lawsuit from ex-coaches will soon be filed and made public to recover any money not recovered via the taxing agencies. My prediction: he will be out of money before any of them can collect anything.

Mike, once you see this you can have one of your attorneys send me a nice threatening letter. Here is my contact information.

Robert:  Your link did not open for me, but I assume it is the post following yours.

Fran:  While I can't comment on Mike's legal or financial issues since I obviously do not know anything about it.  I wholeheartedly disagree with your statement that they are high pressure etc.  They are good sales people presenting an opportunity to those looking to take their business to another level or in another direction.

As for Mike turning people over to collection agencies that do not pay him - he should.  If you sign a contract with Mike Ferry or ANYONE else and do not honor that agreement, there is nothing wrong with ANYONE enforcing the written agreement that was signed.  After all, that is the purpose of a contract isn't it?

I read that article about Mike the other day.

One of my agent friends of mine was a coach for MFO. He confirmed what that post states..the coaches were paid as independent contractors and treated like employees. He told me that he has been contacted about this suit. I guess many of the coaches are really upset that Mike has lied to them... He said that he is joining this suit along with a bunch of his current and past coach friends. He also mentioned that many of the coaches think MFO is going though some pretty tough times.

Sad really. Sign of the times!

Interesting read.  When Mr. Shaw can help 1000's of agents, or even a couple hundred acheive the same success as he has in almost any area or market across the USA, maybe his comments and "techniques" he shares/teaches will have some weight to them.  Until then is like all the rest of the Mike Ferry Haters out there.

I know the coach who is the head coach of all the other coaches.  I'll ask him if there is any weight to this lawsuit.

Shaw's prediction of the MFO going out of business is hillarious.

I joined Mike Ferry and have not been an agent for 1 year as of this post.  The coaching has helped me to grow my business, something that my national company with over 70,000 agents was unable to do.

I read the good and the bad about Mike Ferry but really all that matters to me is that as long as I continue to grow both personally and professionally I will continue to be a one on one student of Mike Ferry.

So, can coaching help an unsuccessful agent become more successful?  or is it only going to work for someone who already is succeeding?

Hi Lynn:  My answer to that would be YES! It can help an unsuccessful agent become more successful with one caveat... Desire.  Without desire, all the coaching in the world won't make a difference in my humble opinion.

Hi Sue,

Great post, thanks ... I too joined about a year ago and this has been my best year so far.  Without it, I would probably have gone out of business.  I've been doing this for 5 years, so new business is still very important to me.

Best regards,
Mike

Looks like Mr. Shaw is a little Bitter. It's certainly no secret Mike Ferry has helped thousands and thousands of Realtors succeed....and no, I am not in one-on-one coaching.

Where can I find information about the judgement that prevents former 1-on-1 coaches from having any contact with previous clients?  I was a One-on-One Client a few years ago and my coaches are now with another organization, offering a completely different service that does NOT impact my relationship with MFO.  MFO is not providing me with the lawsuit informaiton so I verify and research the guidelines.  It is absolutely ridiculous and makes me question the integrity of both sides.  One-on-One was well worth it and the skills, discipline and accountability have contributed to my success, but this lawsuit is simply childlike - the services offer completely different fundamentals.
