Can networking really lead to more business? The answer to that question is, "it depends".
Yes it will if you have a strategy and goals prior to your networking activities. Unfortunately, many business owners and sales people have been to events with no plan and have don a poor job of networking, leading them to believe that networking is a waste of both time and money. However, when done correctly, networking can bring you in a wealth of business. Most sales people and business owners will readily admit that referrals are the largest part of their business.
If you want to earn business at networking events, consider the following points.
- Create Partnerships
Those who are networking savvy go into the meeting with the intention of creating partnerships rather than simply getting business.
- Talk to Strangers
Your parents may have taught you never to talk to strangers, but that advice no longer applies now that you are an adult and it certainly does not apply to networking events. Resist the urge to sit with and talk to only those people you know. Make it a goal to meet at least three new people at each event.
- Volunteer
If you tend to be shy, get involved with the networking group by volunteering your services. Join a committee, nominate yourself for a board or officer position, or help people check in at the door.
- Find the right group
Not every networking group is right for every person. Additionally, once you find a group that brings you business, make a commitment to that group. Help others in the group and build lasting relationships. Remember, it's not what you know but who you know. Even more important, it is not who you know but who knows you!
If you are looking for groups to join or networking events to attend ask your trusted friends for suggestions. Where could you make a contribution? There are many networking group in Westchester County. Here are a few that I like:
BNI – There are many chapters in Westchester. The motto of BNI is “Givers Gain, If I give referrals to the members of my chapter they in turn will want to give referrals to me”. You can find a local chapter at the official BNI website.
The Business Council of Westchester – This organization is Westchester County’s largest and most influential business membership organization, The BCW is committed to helping our members build their businesses, connect with customers, business peers and thought-leaders, and win – the day, the deal and their bottom lines. You can contact me for an inviation or go to their web site at www.thebcw.org.
Why not set a goal to attend two networking events next week?
