A Series on New Businesses in Lewisburg, WV, Part 1, Howes' Things, a High-End Boutique with Affordable Prices

Lewisburg, West Virginia, is a great place to live, work, raise a family, retire, or start a business.  New businesses are opening in this small historical town of 3,700 people, where artists, retirees and shopkeepers live in Colonial and Federal buildings on neat, shady streets.  Named "America's Coolest Small Town", Lewisburg is the largest municipality in Greenbrier County and is also the county seat.

There are several new businesses that have opened this year in Lewisburg, WV.  The first in the series is a gallery called Howes’ Things.

owner of Lewisburg boutiqueHowes' Things Boutique opened their new location April 1, 2011.  The store was previously located on Washington Street.

The owner, Lynda Howe, originally from San Francisco, CA, moved to Lewisburg in 2008 to accept the position of lighting designer and stage manager for Carnegie Hall and for Trillium at the Lewis Threatre.  She had the opportunity to expand her business, and decided to open the boutique.

The store is an eclectic mix of items from hand-carved shorebirds to Pashmina wraps; from historical reproductions to jewelry.  The mission statement for Howes' Things is, “to give our customers the experience of a high end boutique with affordable pricing,” says Lynda.

Her husband, Lanny Howe, is a Presbyterian Minister in Alderson, WV, and helps with the business.

designed hats by Lynda HoweThe Howes are the sole distributor of JaneALTs hats, which were recently called "unique and fashionable" by West Virginia Living Magazine. These innovative one-of-a-kind handmade knit hats can be custom-ordered to suit individual tastes.

Howes' Things is a family owned boutique where their work is displayed and sold.  You will find family photography, as well as her husband’s hand-carved shoe-birds that Lynda paints.  Lynda designs the JaneALTs hats and her hand-made ponchos and scarves.  You will also find locally-made jewelry, historic reproductions and so much more.  Below are a few items you will find at Howes’ Things:

  • Ponchos - $14
  • Necklaces - $8-$20
  • Bracelets & Bangles - $1 and up
  • Body Chain (custom-made) $4-$18
  • Belts $16
  • Sunglasses - $5-$8
  • Watches - $12
  • Scarves - $6 and up
  • Variety of rings - $3 and up
  • Sequined shawls - $16 and up
  • Men’s silk ties - $15

Another part of the business is Civil War Sulters.  (During the Civil War, sulters would follow the armies around selling their wares.)  The Howes takes their act on the road following Civil War Reenactments throughout the year selling historical  reproductions, teas, jewelry, Pashminas, and much more.   Their recent stop in July was the 150th anniversary of the Battle of First Manassas.  Their next stop is 147th Anniversary Cedar Creek Battlefield Reenactment in Middletown, VA, October 15-16.

Stop by Howes' Things today you may find the perfect fashion accessories you’ve been looking for at affordable prices.  Service, good prices, and a wonderful atmosphere is what Howes Things is all about.  Be sure and check out Howes' Things Facebook Page for new arrivals.

Rebecca- I know I'm going to enjoy this series!  What a great little store.  I didn't know about Sulters but I've seen the Civil War Reenactments.  Add that to my long list of what I want to see if I get back up to VA.

Hi Rebecca,

You definitely make me wish I lived in Lewisburg...  looks like such a great place.  I didn't realize that the population was only 3700...  that's a great size and it makes it easier to get to know your neighbors in the town.  By the last few local post's that you have done I can see why it was bestowed as the "America's Coolest Small Town".

This boutique looks like a great place to shop for some unique items.  I can see the "Staging and lighting background" in Lynda with how beautifully she staged her shop.  It looks exquisite...  and love her homemade items.  Thanks for sharing this great post!  You are very creative and exceptionally talented my friend.  I sure wish I lived closer to you!!! xoxoxo
