Speechless Sunday- My Special Hummingbird Nest!

In the spring, while checking on the size of the plums growing on my plum tree, I came face to face with this hummingbird nest. I didn’t want to scare her as she was protecting her eggs. I enjoyed watching the male bird bring her food for the next couple of weeks. Finally we had baby birds peeking their heads up out of the nest and eventually flying away. I miss the birds and hope they will come back next year.

Hi Harry, Yes hummingbrids are unique and I felt very lucky to get this picture in my own backyard. She didn't look scared but I just took 2 pictures and then left her alone. The male bird ran around getting food for her so she didn't have to leave the nest.

That's a great photo of a tough subject to catch still.  Todd Clark caught a shot of one actually extending his tongue the other day....awesome!

I had never seen a hummingbird stay still before as they are always flitting around but she was so still and I watched her sit on the nest for over a week before she left the nest for a couple of minutes.

Hi Wendy

, I keep looking in all the trees in the adjoining yards hoping to see more nests. I felt very lucky that they picked my plum tree to build their nest in. Thanks for stopping!

I enjoy the hummingbirds who visit my gardens, but they nest too far away. One goes to the East and the other to the South.

Hi Marilyn,

The hummingbirds are so special. Someone recently called them little jewels and I thought that truly described them.

I have been loving our hummingbirds, but I have yet to see a nest. I will have to check out all the trees in our backyard to see if I can find signs of one.

Hi Todd, Yes they are not very big. Not much bigger than a large apricot. I am told they are usually higher up than this one but lucky for me to find it. Good luck and hope you find one too.

Thanks so much Joni for the kind comments, I feel bad as I have these 2 huge plants that the hummingbirds love, Mexican Bird of Paradise plants, but do not have any feeders. I tried to hang feeders and all I attracted was ANTS. A lot of the neighbors have feeders though!
