Alan May posted this Kopi Luwak - good to the last "droppings"? It is written in his, and only his, engaging style, that makes him one of the most interesting bloggers.

I guess the way this coffee is done is a surprise for many, and the thought of it may not be the most pleasant one. I am sure it is not the only thing that comes to us from animal dung.

Many plants can grow from a seed. Some, however, are going through the stomach of birds and animals. They would eat a berry, and then the acids in the stomach will work on the pit, and then they will drop it in a «package» that is a fertilizer, and that's how the seed will give life to a plant.

Those, who came here from the Soviet Union, China, Tibet and some other countries are very familiar with mumijo (I do not know an acceptable English translation). It is pretty much a mummy bitumen, and, according to some sources, can have very different origin.

We bought some when we were vacationing in Uzbekistan. The legend has it that to check the quality of mumijo, they would take the liver of just killed sheep, slice it in half with a knife, and then spread a thin layer of mumijo and stick two pieces together and hold half a minute. If after that you raise the liver holding it only by one side, and the other is attached, than it was good.

We had it in our fridge and all burns, cuts were immediately treated with mumijo. We have it in our fridge here in the US.

When not long ago a very good friend of ours was undergoing radiation for her breast cancer, she got to the point when it was so burned, that they could not do it anymore, and it was bad, as she needed to complete the treatment. She used what doctors prescribe for that, but it was not working for her anymore.

We saw a cream based on mumijo, bought it and sent it to her. She tried. When in a few days she came to the doctor, he could not believe his eyes. He asked her to show him what she used and told her that he never saw anything like that. He asked her to write how it is called and where you can buy it.

As far as I head from people in the mountains, it is birds' poop accumulated high in the mountains under low oxygen and low atmospheric pressure in extremely dry air and under a non-forgiving sun.

Well, poop or not, it helped our friend to complete the treatment and not suffer from burns.

So, if this is poop, let it be poop. As long as it heals, I am OK with it.

Jon, I found your blog post quite interesting and immediately did a Google search.  This sounds like something that should be in every medicine cabinet.  I couldn't find where it was made from bird excrement, they probably just didn't want to say it that way... Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

Jon, I never heard of mumijo until today, or Kopi Luwak until reading Alan's blog. Active Rain is truly a fascinating place.

Laura - with radiation treatment it was a coincidence. She complained on terrible unbearable pain that forced her to stop treatment, and we went to a Russian Food store and saw it, and checked the  label, and just sent it to her in hope that maybe it can soothe the wound, and it not only did that, it closed the  wound in record time, so that she could complete the treatment

Judi - in one of the source (it is in Russian) they list 7 or 8 sources of mumijo, and the most wide spread according to it is one of rodents and bats poop.

I take my bird version from people, who are collectors of mumijo in the mountains Central Asia. Some of it is of mineral origin, and they call them "mountains' tears". It is when on the heights where there is nobody and nothing, this bitume type substance fills crevices
