Herringbone hardwood floors Greenwich CT 06831Herringbone hardwood floors provide a rich and traditional look for your home in Greenwich CT...or anywhere else in Fairfield and Westchester counties.  These are some herringbone floors that we recently refinished in a classic Greenwich home.

Herringbone is more expensive than regular hardwood.  First, the wood itself is more expensive as the pieces need to be precut and are all even so that they properly fit together.  Typically herringbone is also select grade (which is more expensive as the knots are filtered out and there is less color variation.  It's important the thw hardwood is proper milled and the tongue and groove properly line up together.

Second, as I'm sure can iHerringbone oak hardwood floors - Fairfield CT and Westchester NYmagine, this hardwood takes more patience and time to install and takes a higher skill level.

Usually herringbone floors are installed with unfinished wood and then you sand & refinish them on site.  This gives them a tighter fit and more even look and feel after they are sanded.  The sanding process takes a bit longer and more skill as well as the wood is going in 2 different directions.  You can refinish them natural (the lightest they can be) or with a stain and then you add on 2-3 coats of polyurethane.  This one is done in a medium brown (but the color is not showing up correctly in the digital picture.

Herringbone hardwood floors can be very impactful in an entryway, living room or dining room.  Some of the older homes in Greenwich CT, Scarsdale NY, Bronxville NY and New Canaan CT have herringbone floors in some or all of the rooms on the first floor along with maple and walnut borders for an extra touch of class.

If you are looking to add herringbone hardwood floors, or refinish your herringbone floors in Westchester or Fairfield counties, give us a call at Floor Coverings International (914-937-2950) and let us bring the "store to your door."

Debbie, the herringbone floors look very classy. Is each piece individually installed?

Debbie, the Herringbone can look beautiful, especially in a smaller room. But I think in an large living room, I would prefer the more traditional hardwood.

Joy - thx and you're welcome.

Micaael - Thx and yes, each piece is individually installed.  That's why it takes a bit longer.

Donald - Glad you like it.  I think it really depends on the decor and look of the home. This is not great for modern looking homes but does look really classy in an older home or Tudor or something like that.  ironically, this picture is in a huge living room - It''s prob. at least 600 sf and probably more.

I love hardwood flooring.  I added $42,000 in additional hardwood when I built my home.  HA!  That presented a challenge for the appraiser.

That said, not a fan of Herringbone or Parquet.  I believe that those busy designs shrink the visual and feel of a room.  Just my meaningless opinion.  That said, I'm a big fan of area rugs with color.

Sherri - Thx.  I'm glad you like them.

Lenn - Yes, I love hardwood flooring, and that is always an investment that will pay out.  Herringbone only works for some homes.  I agree that it makes a room look smaller...which is why it only works in either larger spaces or areas where you are less concerned abt size and more about style.  Oh, and I hate parquet floors, too...at least the normal parquet.  there are some super fancy parquet floors that are stunning and very intricate.  But, again, it only works in some homes and usually only a limited space such as a dining room.  Those fancy parquets are extramely expensive.

I have not seen this before in this Market Place. I think because my family member had wide planks as a child is still remains a favorite.

Cheryl - Yes, I love wide plank too.  Herringbone is an older more classic look for some of the older more regal mansions in our area...or older classic homes going for that rich look.

Debbie -- That certainly must be intricate and time consuming to install. I love different floors.  As much as I love hardwoods, I get tired of seeing the same all the time.  Although I have not seen herringbone in recent recollection, I would think it is stunning in a very large room as you mentioned.

Hillary - Thx girl.

Barbara - Yes it looks great in homes like this.  I forget how large it is...either 600 or 800 sf + attached to a libary which is another 300-400 sf.  Huge place.

I like hardwood flooring straight up ( is there such a thing?). You know, the good old fashion stuff. Herringbone is nice, but not for me. Nice post.

Debbie,, thank you for introducing Herringbone to me. I have never seen Herringbone here in Greater Toronto Area. Parquet is quite prevalent in older homes (including 2 rooms at my place) and newer homes are all opting for Hardwood flooring. Bamboo is becoming quite popular with lots of people for environmental reasons. I have to upgrade my dining, living, family and 2 bedrooms with hardwood soon....and I am likely to go for Engineered Hardwood for basement. Your suggestions?

Hi Debbie, I haven't seen herringbone floors in a long time. They are beautiful but as you said, they are meant for larger rooms. I can see why it's more expensive. It is more labor intensive.

Spam - Reported & reported your comments on other posts.  Thx for the pts.

Sandy - Yes, I know exactly what you mean...that's what I typically install.

Rajeev - Yes, seems to be more common here in Mid Atlantic/Northeast w/ the elegant older homes.  For your basment, engineereed hardwood is prob. best, esp if it's below grade and/or on cement.  It will hold up better (less expansion/contraction and less expensive since you won't need to install plywood. but, it is important that you floor is level.

Jackie - yes, it's definitely better for larger space and you're right, it is more labor intensive.
