My Demand Finally Gets Results !

I saw a photo here in the Rain of a Hummingbird with his tongue out. I had never even considered that they have a tongue much less such a long one. I have been practically obsessed with one little fellow who decided that both of my feeders are his and no one else can have any. I am getting to know him pretty much on a first name basis, though I have no idea what his name is but we talk at least a few times a day.  Actually I talk and he pretends to listen, LOL

This past week , it seems we have talked a lot and he has posed for photos quite a few times at his favorite locations. And he gave up some great shots  showing off his reflected colors. Then I saw that photo here in the Rain and I told him he has been holding back on me. "Some little friend" I suggested, I have been feeding and looking out for him for some time now and this is how he pays me back. So this morning I had had enough of begging him to stick his tongue out so I could take a photo. I told him plainly "No tongue out, no more feeder" ! I told him if he didn't stick his tongue out ( since prior to seeing that other photo here in the Rain), I didn't even think about him having a tongue. But for sure I hadn't seen it. His response to my threat was that he just flew off.

I took the feeder down to clean it and refill it and I guess he thought I was serious. He came back and I said I was getting the camera and that he better deliver the goods this time. He looked at me with his head sort of cocked as if to say, " Hurry up already". I brought the camera out and said I was ready and he proceeded to give me some splendid new photos. In fact he delivered in spades.

We are friends again!  As I was selecting one of his new photos to show you, I wondered what he will think next week when I return and tell him I want him to sit on hand to feed him. Maybe I shouldn't push it just yet!

Take a look!

William, the magical relationship with "man and beast" is one that we should never sell short. This just proves it again. You have magic, and he(?) or she (?) listened and delivered, because you did! It's symbiotic.

I truly believe that animals far surpass us in ways that we can't even imagine. Maybe they just humor us. Ha!

You are patient, too and it paid off.

Hi William, Glad you took the time to capture that quick tongue on film.  They do everything quickly, yet can hoover in the air unlike other birds.  Thank you!.

Thank you all for your wonderful compliments and I am delighted you all enjoyed this as much as I did in capturing it.  I see this little guy a few times every day, when I take a break and go outside, I call him and within 20 or 30 seconds he come back. I have been able to get within 3 or 4 feet of him and soon I hope to be able to gets some great detailed close-ups with the camera. As for the tongue, he uses that to catch tiny flying bugs and the coincidence of me asking and him seeing something to catch was a real joy to experience. He chases anything that comes near the feeders. This early evening 2 birds were on one feeder and one on the other and out of nowhere he comes charging through and scares all of them away. I was within about 24 inches of them this time and if that holds true tomorrow evening, the really up close photos may even catch the color of his eyes ( they look mostly black thus far. :-)

Hi William, I just joined the Bird Group as I have a big interest in taking bird pictures. My camera doesn't do such a great job and I think I need to get a better zoom camera than I have. I enjoyed your hummingbird photo. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Kristin, Thank you for droping by and commenting. What kind of camera are you using? I am on very friendly terms with this bird. He visits everytime I am outside on my patio. I call him and he comes within a minute or so. Today with hand stretched I was within 18 inches, I made no further advances today and went back to sit. I hope one day soon he will feed from my hand.  He has a favorite place in the hedge and he sits on a very small branch and sort of bounces up and down. Must be good for digestion, :-) The photo was taken very close up.

Hi William,

I have a Kodak zoom camera and says it has 8.1 mega pixels. I bought it to take my BPO's and listings as I kept dropping my little cameras but it does not give me the quality I really want. I think I need to buy a new camera. I probably need to take it off automatic focus and learn how to use my settings. It is on my list of things to do this month. If the quality does not get better, I may have to break down and buy a new one! Your hummingbird photo is one of the best I have seen.

Hi Kristin, Before you do anything, take your camera to a camera store and ask them to check it out. There may be some settings that are wrong. Auto focus is not the best but that does not account for the quality issue of the photo that you are mentioning. Something seems wrong and it is best to let an expert look and make some recommendations.

I have to tell you about this little guy. We were in triple digits today and he flew over to me about a foot from my face sort of danced about and seemed he was in distress. His chest was heaving a lot. I took his food down and made some fresh nectar with ice water and when I hung up the feeder he went right to it, drank a lot and he looked back at me as if he was feeling better. Perhaps all this closeness is my head and it is all just a mormal way these birds behave.

Hi William,

What a wonderful story and how perceptive of you to know what this little fellow needed. I am sure with time, he will probably trust you enough to eat out of your hand. Great story!

Hi Kristin, Thank you , I am glad you enjoyed this. I have come to within 18 inches of him and that's about it so far. He does still come when I call but has changed locations of where he perches to less accessible sections of the bushes on the back yard. In some ways it feels like I am not progressing but actually going backwards in gaining his confidence.
