Locusts?....No they are not really locusts!

They are Cicadas!

That creaky sounding insect that makes music at night. I guess to me there is nothing more soothing then sitting outside and listening to them sing. That is until one almost flies into your face! This guy almost did and I got my camera really quick to take a picture of him. You hardly even see them but this guy was hung up on a spider's web so he was sticking around for a picture.

Some facts about cicadas:

1. There are over 2500 species of cicadas

2. Only male cicadas sing which they do by vibrating a membrane on their abdomen.

3. While you would think that they eat other insects they actually eat plant sap.

4. Cicadas can live from 2-17 years.

5. Cicadas live in buroughs about 8.5 feet under ground.

6. Cicadas look a little scary but they are totally harmless to humans.

Hope you all are having a good weekend and that you enjoyed my cicada!

The sounds they give off are mostly relaxing, and not bad to hear with the windows open at night.

They seem to be out in mass this year in Georgia, our drought may have brought them in, they are noisy!!!

Very true! Male cicadas don't use stridualtion (rubbing of body structures like crickets do); they use a membrane to produce their song.

It truly is a wonderful sound on a quiet evening.  And they may not be able to actually hurt you, but they sure can make you hurt yourself trying to get away from them ;)

Scott- Yes I love to hear them at night! They are far superior to the sounds of running water to get me asleep. Thanks for stopping by!

Ted- I read in one of the online sourses that they actually vary in numbers over the  different years! So  that very well could be the case! Enjoy your hot summer now!

Mike- I thought that to be a very fun fact too! Thanks for the comment!

Mimi- When it flew past my ear I thought it was a hummingbird! Then I noticed it was a huge bug and I danced quite the jig to get the heck away! If you see it up close from the bottom it looks like a fish too! Its all silver and scaly looking! As always it was enchanting!  :)

I thought my dogs were "playing" with one last week...then realized it was just its cast-off shell.  Love them!

Julia- Thats kind of funny that you would say that because it said on one of the sites I looked at that it was very common for dogs and cats to eat them! Nasty!
