Be Careful What You Say In Real Estate!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Brooks Prime Properties Wichita Falls Texas

I am sure we all have a few strange stories in Real Estate to tell. How could we not? Some are good stories, some are not so good and others are just strange.
That is exactly this story.

house for saleOnce upon a time, my husband and I were contacted by a gentleman that was checking himself into a nursing home and was ready to list his house for sale. We were very happy to help him sell his home for as much money as we possibly could. The little house was located off the main drag of Trinity, Texas and could possibly be used as a commercial property which added value to his old building.  Even so, the house was old and modest. It couldn't command much money in the grand scheme of things.

He met with us to sign the paperwork and all that was left was for us to determine the price by visiting the property. While putting the listing paperwork together we listed what would stay in home. It was most everything since he would have no use for it in the Nursing Home. The refrigerator would stay, the A/C units of course, the blinds, his drapes, the little microwave, free standing shelves in the bath and so forth.

We then scheduled a time to go take photos and determine the final value. He explained that he had a great many personal things still there and was going to have to remove them all and have the home cleaned by his cleaning lady.

Perfect! Professionally cleaned  and ready to show! All Gone!

So, we then visited the house. Talk about shocked!  The house was completely empty! No NOTHING! Not even a light fixture...no refrigerator, no blinds, nothing...just empty holes where the A/C's were...NOTHING!

We called him right away!

Our sweet and loving Gentleman explained the story. He had quite a few of his personal items in boxes and others scattered throughout the house. When his maid / housekeeper came to clean he told her, "take anything you want or that you think you can use" and paid her for the cleaning.

Well needless to say she did. Yep, she did. She took EVERYTHING.

Even the ceiling fans!ceiling fans too

So, watch what you say in Real Estate. Of course this made us nearly frantic but he just shrugged and said, "well, I told her she could!"

And, the house was sold "as-is"....

The end and totally true.

Oh that is a terribly sad story, Deb.  Hopefully those personal things weren't that precious to him, or he was able to retrieve them from the cleaning lady.  Sad, sad, sad.

Well he did say she could take whatever she wanted. And he didn't need or want what he left, so it is OK. She probably could have given him a discount on the cleaning, though.

Deb, that is a funny story.  I would have thought the cleaning lady might have asked, do you mean the appliances too????  Of course, she probably thought that she had hit the jack pot.  I hope the sale was smooth.

Thanks for sharing the story. I can imagine buyers asking for things when they see ' as is '  in mls but can not imagine a cleaning woman taking every thing.

I have to wonder if she uses him as a reference now?

Phil, I am certain the law would have filed a report and then would have gone after his goods if he would have let us do so. We highly insisted for him to try and get certain items back such as the A/C units but he wouldn't have anything to do with it...

again...he just shrugged and said, "forget about it...I told her she could". The whole thing made me sad.

Jane, isn't it sad? Oh jeesh! I know he was shocked too but was too gentle and kind to go after the lady.

Sandy, yep! That's what he decided too. He said take it and she did. Bottom line! I just don't know how the lady lives with what she did.

Mike, when we saw the holes in the walls where the A/C units were removed it was a real OMG moment!

John, I sure wish I had them available! Although this was a few years ago. This is one time that stays fresh in my memory and will forever!

Ann, she hit the jackpot alright! And a Bingo!

Gita, it was sad to say the least.

Phil and Patti, No kidding! Really thorough!

Patricia, I'm sure he's long forgotten this by now. Funny how time softens even the worst times.

Valerie, the maid scam! It is sad how people take such advantage over our elders.

Bruce, it was clean alright! As a whistle!

Christine, I couldn't believe it either. But, it happened!

Elizabeth, OPEN MOUTH INSERT FOOT! I totally understand!!!

Gabrielle, learned the hard way!

Wow!  I love his response "well, I told her she could!"  Instead of being mad and upset he shrugged it off.   That's a great story that could have been a nightmare story. - Kasey

Deb,

What a true/funny story. I'm amazed by the gap between what is said and what is heard.

Yikes! Talk about taking advantage of someone and the situation. He certainly was calm about it though. At least he had a good Realtor on his side.
