Help! I have Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)!

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Platinum

A few days ago,I posted on my Facebook how my Restless Leg Syndrome was driving me nuts!  I had asked if anyone had any solutions, and I got some interesting responses...a few from my friends here on ActiveRain.

 rls

Cindy Edwards suggested I blog about it here, and I agreed it was a great idea.  I always learn so much from the friendly and informative folks on ActiveRain, so if you can add any other RLS solutions, I would love to hear them!

Sandy Shores also gave me some great advice: limit sugar, work out at night, take magnesium and calcium supplements and also melatonin too.

Tony Toto suggests walking it off like he does :-)

Some other Facebook friends suggested the following:

--Put a bar of white soap between your sheets

--Organic Massage Oil rubbed on the affected areas

--Tie legs together

--Mirapex, Highland's Restful Legs

--Iron supplementation but taken with Vitamin C

My mother has low iron, and I know it runs in the family, so I will be getting Iron Supplements for sure today (along with Vitamin C).  But, any other ideas (preferablly natural), would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Kristin,

My brother was complaining about this as well.  I read the suggestions to him and he just laughed.  He suggests sleeping with a pillow between your legs.  I suggest hot bath and Tylenol.  I know you can't do that verynight, but at least get a good nights sleep tonight!

Teach your toes how to type and then when your legs are restless; they can do your posts for you :). That must be awful, Kristin, I don't have any suggestions but I hope someone else comes up with something good.

Kristin, I am going to check back on this one to see if anyone else comes up with any solutions. After several days I feel like a walking zombie, due to lack of sleep.

I also have RLS, but I haven’t had any problems with it in about 35 years. A doctor at the Houston Medical Center told me that the best thing for RLS is exercise. Ever since then I’ve been going for daily walks, bike rides, volleyball, tennis, whatever. Anything to get my legs moving. It has worked!

Happy Thursday!

Russel, I work out each day so I know working out is not the issue...actually I read that too much working out can make the problem worse, so maybe that is it??

Kristin, I suffered horrifically from RLS a few years back.  The only thing that gave me any relief (and I tried everything) was two Tylenol and hot milk (heated till it boils) 1/2 an hour before bed.

I still occasionally have this problem when I am seriously overtired or have sat too long.  Now that I am walking everyday, lowered my sugar levels dramatically and sleep much better I rarely have issues.

I do hope you find some relief from this quickly.  It is really a miserable thing to go through, effecting sleep and relaxation which makes for some miserable days.

If anyone would have tied my legs together while it was bad,......

Are you getting a day or two of rest each week?  Your body needs recuperation time as well.

Laura, not really, I have been doing P90x 6 days a week, and work in my regular hr plyo/interval training too

Try doing three days on and one day off.  Give your body recovery time.  You know how it is, too much of anything is not good.

I had to stop taking multi vitamins.  I know this sounds strange to many, but when I took multi vitamins, I couldn't sleep and the RLS was horrific.  I stopped taking them and after several days it would get better and better.  I thought there was no way the vitamins were doing this to me, so I did that 5 times!  Took them and within a few weeks the symptoms got progressively worse, stopped and they eased.  Strange I know.  Not saying this is what is doing it to you, but it's one more thing you could rule out.

Now, that PX90,... I have the 10 minute trainer and really want to work up to the PX90.  How do you like it?

Laura, I feel really guilty if I even take one day off!  I know, I know...strange on the multivitamin...I never take any supplements, meds, etc but finally just bought a multi vitiman, seems the same to me.  As far as P90X..it is tough, but totally doable...I did the first round of 90 days and just finished that less than a month ago.  Go for it, but take it slow if you aren't used to workouts....I have been working out since 98/2000 daily and usually do 1-1.5 hrs a day of advanced plyo, or interval training, so take care....
