We now have women involved in all the spheres of business and politics, including a presidential candidate. The women, who made it to the top, undoubtedly are masters of networking and self-promotion. Yet for many women, self-promotion and networking are still not part of a regular business day. That’s why I was excited to find W.I.N – Women Interested in Networking - a network of professional women with the stated goal of “shameless” self –promotion.                                                                                                      woman networking

Last Tuesday I attended this group’s meeting. When I walked in, the room was buzzing - it actually looked like a speed dating meeting (I never attended one, but that’s the image I have).  Close to sixty women were moving around, rapidly introducing themselves, asking about each others business and exchanging business cards.  I walked away with 10 business cards; the rest will be scanned by the organizers and distributed to all who attended. The second part of the meeting was a 30 second commercial each of the women got to present what they do. It was an interesting experience, and it made me realize, I need to do more work to explain in 30 seconds why should someone consider me to be his or her real estate agent.

At the meeting there were women lawyers, chiropractors, public relations, financial consultants and many others whose services I can use personally or refer business to them.  I liked the feeling of  “shameless” self-promotion, which is usually contrary to my behavior. I sometimes refer to myself as a “secret” agent, because I don’t like in-your-face type sales and pushy salespeople. I did not have to worry about it at this gathering – I was there to tell everyone that I sell real estate, what is special about my work, and hand out my business card.

I plan to get to know these women better, and "shamelessly" promote those who provide excellent service to their clients.  One of my firm beliefs is that one has to first give, before they can receive. It"s true in personal relationships and it works in the professional ones. At the meeting I proudly described my blogging, and  offered to help with anyone who wants to start (the women had no experience at all). As I learn more about their businesses, I plan to write about it in my blog, since it can help my readers to learn more about the community.

Professional network like Active Rain expands the opportunity for women to reach out in support of other exceptional women professionals (without offence to the outstanding professional men) beyond their geographical community.

Being with other women also gives me an opportunity to talk about the important role women play in decisions relating to real estate.  Some statistics show that 20% of women buy real estate by themselves. Another large percentage – are the important decision makers. The idea of women supporting and promoting women isn’t new – man have been doing it for ages. We need to learn from the best.

woman power

Truth be told, I hesitated with the title, is it too pushy? Ladies and gentleman, what do you think?

Faina, there's an old saying - if you don't toot your own horn, who else will?  The answer:  other people who know you, from referral networks and from the people you have worked with in the past!  There's nothing to be gained by being shy about asking for recommendations...

Brian - for me it's more about connecting and building relationships. It was easy to promote myself there, because that was the purpose of people being there. I am obviously looking for networking opportunities with both man and women, AR is just one example. But I do want for me and for other women to be out there - in the big girls network -it's good for business. Thanks for your comment at this late hour. BTW- if you know anyone coming to Princeton, please ask them to give me a call.

Faina, Networking is what it is all about.  I am trying to get out as much as I can.  Good luck!  By the way, I like the title, I don't think it's too pushy.

We'll remember you if we have someone moving in that direction. And please remember us if you have someone wanting to relocate or buy a second home in Arizona.

Faina- I love the title and you just go on and self promote! That is a good thing! I love networking events too. Especially in this type of format where that is the purpose of the meeting. Good luck, maybe I shall write a post about making your 30 second commercial, or elevator speech as we call it in marketing. Katerina

Faina, these networking groups are great. Just like activerain, trust is built. Have you added your blog to your business  card? That would be an excellent way to get them to read about your and your knowledge of Princeton. Sort of a two edged sword.

Roberta - what was great about this meeting that it was all about self promotion and no one had to pretend otherwise. Sometimes there are networking events , such as lecture and no one exchanges business cards. Thanks for your comment.

Faina, I read the post because of the great title. Sounds like a great networking idea. I wonder if they have something in our area.

Katerina - the 30 second pitch had to start with your name and company name, end with your name and company name, that left about 15 seconds for the rest. The organizers were true to their word -they stopped you after 30 seconds. It was a great exercise. Katerina, writing a post would be good, plus I have another idea.

Missy - great idea about the business cards. I did not do it yet, unsure if If I will have the stamina to continue here, and also planning for another blog. But you are right, I am missing an opportunity. I already recommended for one lady at the meeting to join AR. Thanks for your support.

Gita- thanks. May be you can come to the next meeting to see what it's all about. You never know who may get tired of NJ and move to Bucks county. If you like it you may be can start a local chapter.

Bob and Karolin - I know Arizona is a place people want to go for the quality of life. I am glad that I now met someone I can recommend. Thanks for your offer as well. Princeton is what many people think of when they think about this area, but there are many other towns, like Hopewell, Lawrenceville, West Windsor, Montgomery township, that are within a few miles and are less expensive, just not as well known.

Faina, pushy is not a word that I associate with you!  And there is absolutely nothing wrong with shameless self promotion!

FAINA:  It's not at all pushy in my mind.  I will say that around here, there seems to be many women's organizations established for the purpose of networking.  Some of them encourage men to join as well.  I've done the speed networking and have found some success in finding people to network with.  For what it's worth, you're my Princeton connection should the need ever arise.
