I have been told and think Norton stinks.

Someone just suggested Clam-Win. They appear to be alright.

To be fair to Norton, the automatic update is for making sure new virus protections get added as viruses appear. If you have decided to run Norton you should enable the automatic updates. Whether or not you want to run a piece of software that interferes with your computer all day long is a different story. I loved the earlier and simpler versions of the Norton products, but they are like Robo-Cop these days. You never know when it might turn around and shoot you.

As far as the Windows automatic updating, I'd enable that as well. Microsoft writes a lot of code and a certain percentage of it is going to be vulnerable to hackers or just plain not working right. The updates are a reasonable response to the dilemman of keeping current.

Neither Norton nor Windows updates have anything to do with SEO.

I let the updates run in your case for both.  It will provide the system to operate more effectively with new software and hardware issues.  I have XP and need Service Pac 2 to run my operating system.

Tommy,

If you leave your machine on most of the time, you can set the updates to run during the night.  That way it does not interfere with business.  I am not sure how to set it, but it can be done.

Hello, I have been in the Computer Industry for over 12 years. I always tell my clients to always update your machines. These updates are software patches for flaws in the software that were found after the fact.

As far as Norton Goes I have nothing for them at all. I use McAfee Anti-Virus and Firwall. I have not had any problems at all. For those of you who want to switch please remember you must Uninstall First before you Install New Anti-virus Software or you will have a mess.

Tommy set them to automatically update that way you have the most current version. Your anti-virus software is only as current as your last update.

I didn't always enable automatic updates with my older computer. It didn't have a lot of memory. With my new computer I allow automatic updates. I hardly notice it with the amount of memory I have (2GB).  Occasionally I will get a message from Spyware Doctor telling me that I have to reboot my system in order for the updates to take effect.  But for the most part I think it's a good idea to allow automatic updates. It keeps the software current.

I used to be an advocate of always allowing Windows to update automatically.  Recently I had some "issues" that would not let certain things run - it may have been because I had installed something I shouldn't of, but now I have Windows inform me when there is an update and if I would like it installed.
