Perception is Reality

Joy Daniels Bear Cloud PerceptionMy husband and I were taking a walk this evening and I looked up and saw a cloud formation that appeared to me to be a big bear, I pointed it out to my husband he said - "it's not a bear, it's a pig!"  I wanted to see a bear and that is what I saw, he perceived a pig and to him the cloud was a pig.  I wish I would have had my camera or at least my cell phone with me so I could snap a picture (I know - I should always have my camera with me!)

While we were finishing our walk, I started thinking about how differently we saw the same cloud - at the same time and started to think about how buyers see homes they are considering to purchase and how sellers see their homes they have listed for sale.  There is often a huge difference in perception.

Just because we see something a particular way does not make it so. We can be so insistent sometimes that our way of seeing something is more right than someone else’s way.  Perhaps that is part of problem when Buyer's make low offers and Sellers are insulted!  They each have their own perception of what is reality.

I think as realtors we need to be aware of this perception and be careful with our words when trying to help our clients "understand" what they are experiencing.  Keep an open mind at all times and remember that a point of view is always valuable to each individual and it is their reality,

I love this post.. It would be great to see the photo of the cloud so we could chime in on what we see... I agree that perception is in the eye of the beholder...

Joy - I see one of those little white Scotty dogs or is it Westies (or something like that).  On another note though, don't buyers and sellers hire Realtors/agents for their perception of the market?

Joy, one of the best Realtors I know NEVER says anything bad about a house, a client, another agent or anyone.  First, of all perception is reality.  The client may see through the filth, the dirt, the dust to see a dream home.  And all the other people could be friends or relatives.  Nuff said.

I like reading your responses.  I definitely think we are hired for our perception of the market and I like the positive aspect approach, that has certainly worked for me - although I can't claim I have NEVER said anything bad about a house.  I'll work on that part! :)

HI Joy - Great post and positive reminder about perception. In our hustle and "busy-ness" we do get a bit set in our perceptions regarding a homes condition, market values, etc. It takes conscious effort to remember there are different view points and we must always keep an open mind and be open to new ideas. Enjoy your weekend!

This post kinda makes me think of the Rorschach test that is used by psychologists.
