Who Wants Some of That Squirrel Stew?

Granny on the old TV show , "The Beverly Hillbillies" often remarked to Jed that he ought to go out and get a passel of squirrels so she make some squirrel stew. Although I'm not sure how many are in a passel, I'm guessing it's a lot because there's not a lot meat per square inch on a squirrel.

I've probably given a lot more thought to this than I should have, but bear with me a minute. I came home for lunch today, because I only have an early evening appointment. The plan was to do a little paperwork, prepare for this evening's appointment, and maybe take a power nap.

But, I noticed a couple of squirrels playing in a live oak tree. So I tried to do my best Kathy Strieb {an awesome Stager and nature photographer in how many squirrels in a passel?Palm Beach County FL}  photojournalist impression to get a shot like she does worthy on at least an honorable mention in the National Geographic Magazine.

Well I closed the car door very quietly and readied the camera. Then I slowly approached Rocky, the squirrel, from what I think may have been his blind side. Slowly, slowly, I got closer, then crouched down to a kneeling position and just watched him for a bit. I wondered how  people shoot such small animals with the crude guns they had back in the day. If you had a big family you had to shoot a passel of squirrels and other animals to have much of a meal.Rocky is alert now

I just wanted a picture of Rocky because I'm probably a bit to citified to enjoy a meal of squirrel stew. I did check and there are several recipes for the dish of squirrel stew on websites for your enjoyment. In fact there are even some You Tube-how to videos for the dish.

So if you want some Squirrel Stew and you don't have a family recipe handed down from your Granny, just Google-Squirrel Stew. But if you want some help with your real estate needs here in South Texas, you can Google that too.

Well...now I know where I can go for a recipe for squirrel stew should I ever need one (doubtful, but one never knows, LOL).  Great pictures of the little guy though.  I hope he doesn't know you were thinking of squirrel stew though.

Hi Wayne - I lived in a small town in rural PA that used to do a wild game dinner every year as a fund-raiser and I've actually eaten squirrel. I can tell you that it isn't on the list of my finest culinary experiences - but it wasn't anywhere near as bad as groundhog.

Wayne: I don't believe squirrel stew would be my first choice. We have many squirrels in our area. Just give me a call and we can make a donation a few so you can practice your photography. We have mama's, papa's and babe's and maybe a few grandparents.Looks like he was posing for the camera.

Teri-That's not my first choice either.

Brenda-Only thinking, I'll not be sitting down to a bowl of that.

Dick-Groundhog? Now that is a new entrant for me on the culinary chart of things I want to avoid.

Carl and Ceil-I wonder if it's the lack of rain this year. There seem to be a lot more than usual out and about.

Nothing like a fresh steaming bowl of squirrel soup....(gag) but those little varmits are not fun to have inside your walls, running around and eating in to wiring, through ceiling tiles. Cute and dangerous.

Hi Wayne~ I prefer the way YOU shot the squirrel! With a camera. Cute little fella.

My Dad used to go inside the house, grab a few peanuts in the shell, come back out and tap one on the sidewalk outside our back door. Two squirrels learned to come and eat peanuts from my dad's hand that way!

Thanks for the memories your post evoked.

Best regards from Seattle,

Squirrel meat is not bad tasting...neither is rabbit. I ate them as a child. Would I today? No, it is enough that we slaughter many cattle for meat...now alligator that is different...and that is really good eating!

Andrew, Nice shot.

Judi-These squirrels seem to be a bit skittish. And not sure if I want to encourage them to stick around.

Sussie-I've never had alligator meat either, but I think I'd be more apt to try it before squirrel.

I wouldn't want to cook the stew, but I would probably taste it if Carl's doing the cooking.
