7th - 12th Grade Requirement

A new CA school immunization law requires all students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2011-2012 school year in California to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap.

Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for months. The immunity received from either early childhood immunization or pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis.

Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools and communities against pertussis.  The new requirement affects all students – current, new, and transfers – in public and private schools. The law has two phases:

·     For the 2011-2012 school year, all students entering into 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grades will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.

·     For 2012-2013 and future school years, all students entering into 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school.

Governor Brown has signed into law SB 614 which allows a 30 calendar day extension to the Tdap requirement.  The bill allows students in 7th-12th grades to conditionally attend school.  The student will be excluded from school if proof of the Tdap is not received by September 23.  This extension period is for the 2011-12 school year only.

Great local information. Parents would hate for their kids to show up for school and then be sent home!

Have a great weekend!

Wonderful heads up to the students.  I know this has been a problem in college dorms as well so I am sure that many states are beginning to make this a requirement to protect the whole.

Donne, I have not heard of the school districts requiring this to be done around here, but I think it is a great idea and should be done.

Donne, I thought whooping cough was a long-gone disease like tuberculosis.  But, with all the immigration I suppose these things come back again and again.  (I am not against immigration by the way).

More and more I am hearing about older diseases making a come back.  I truly believe it's due to the overuse of antibiotics.  Abigail had to have this to go to college a few years ago.

Donne, when I read this an old memory appeared.  When I was in elemtary school I reember having to take the polio vaccine.  All the children had to stand in line and wait for turn to get the shot.  I was soooo scared...my little arms were so skinny I thought for sure the needle would go right thru my arm.  One child did pass out.  Now days, shots are easier to take :-)

Have to say that I am glad I am out of school.  I do not like shots but know that they are necessary.  Just amazing what they need to do to protect our children from this terrible disease.

Gina - And that is exactly what will happen if kids/parents don't have proof of the immunization too.

Connie - From what I hear from my neighbors, this was a big issue when it was first announced in the spring.  The whole brouhaha this summer was about getting an extension to the requirement.

George - It actually just became a law here recently and I think it's a good idea too but a lot of parents were up in arms about it though.

Ron - I did too until I heard from some neighbors (with school age kids) that there have been an increase in reported cases here in CA.  Just when you thought we have extinguished something, it comes back.

Tammy - I don't know why we seem to have flare-up in some of these diseases that were supposed to have been eradicated but here we are in the 21st century fighting these diseases all over again.

Thx for stopping by everyone; I really appreciate it.  Have a good day too.  :)

The assumption is that many of these older illnesses and diseases are eradicated .. and it's just not true.  You provide a great community service here, Donne.  But then again, you're the best at doing that ...

Rebecca - I've always hated shots too!  Needles too!  I don't even like to watch when they have to draw blood from me.  UUUGGGHHH!!!

Barb - It is such a necessary thing nowadays, immunizations.  Not being a parent I haven't really gotten involved in all the controversary of immunizations but living on a street with a lot of parents, I do hear both sides of the argument about getting them and not.

Gene - It is so true that some of the things we thought were long gone are still here.  The funny thing is that the I only know about this because of all the chatter I've heard from neighbors about it since it was first announced a few months ago.

Thx for stopping by folks; I really appreciate it.  Have a good night too.  :)

Jill - This has become a law here now and it's been a pretty big deal with a lot of the parents.  I actually think it's a good thing but then again what do I know.  I'm not a parent.  Thx for stopping by Jill; I appreciate it.  Have a good weekend.  :)
