*******************************************

OCTOBER 22:

I have been pondering what to write. It was an easy decision to focus on much more important things, the significant fires burning here in San Diego. All else pales in comparison.

What many have feared for months is occurring - the Santa Ana winds have blown into the area and fires are spreading rapidly and out of control up in Los Angeles and here in the San Diego County area.

Fires are raging in a number of San Diego County areas - Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Ramona, down south near the border, a new fire in San Marcos, Escondido and more. With the significant winds fires keep popping up and none of them are under control.

7:30 AM Monday 10/21 - I JUST TALKED TO WILLIAM JOHNSON and he is being evacuated as I write. He's fine but obviously concerned and trying to get things in order quickly to leave.

Schools have been closed, parts of the I15 freeway have been closed as have other roads in the endangered areas. The roada are becoming increasingly clogged with so many areas needing to leave, and major roads being closed in some areas.

The smoke has darkened much of the sky and the smell is pretty strong. Lots of areas have been evacuated. People are asked to not use their cell phones to keep lines of communication open.

Photos were taken early this morning in my backyard. Eerie sky.

What is concerning is that the winds have not died down and are blowing ashes and embers which start fires elsewhere. Here are some photos from my back yard. So, yeah, 200,000 points. But it seems sort of irrelevant in the face of what Southern California is facing.

8:06 AM I JUST TALKED TO WILLIAM AGAIN - not being evacuated NOW but on alert. More later. There are more important thngs to worry about.

11:40 AM  UPDATE. Winds are still very strong and more homes have been destroyed in Rancho Bernardo, Escondido and other communities. Some evacuation oreders have been lifted!! Most of the evac centers are now filled. Smoke is worse and everyone told to stay inside and keep their windows shut. Several hospitals have been evacuated as well. Things keep shifting because of the winds so it's hard to keep track of all that is happening. They are bringing firefighters from Northern Cali and other states to help since they are so overloaded. The photos in the burning areas further inland are horrific. I was in one of the areas where there is a fire in Rancho Santa Fe on Saturday with my Rancho Bernardo buyers - I suspect they have had to evacuate.

Just announced mandatory evacuation of Rancho Santa Fe.

250,000 evacuated so far as of 12 noon

2:00 PM

Just talked with Roberta - she's fine but getting prepared.  Talked with Laurie Manny who has been in touch with Brian who I believe was at one of the evac centers (Qualcomm Stadium).  Also talked to Marlene who is fine for now. Air quality is getting worse and worse. Here are some more photos - air is like the marine layer. Some downed trees and many branches too, due to the winds. Awful!

4:30 PM Monday 10/22:Just talked to Bill Roberts in Mission Valley and he is safe and well. They have not been asked to evacuate. The fire in San Marcos (about 5 miles east) is getting under control and the wind, at least near the coast, seems to be dying. It's the best we can hope for.

The air quality is horrible and you can see some ash floating around. The air looks lilke fog.

RED CROSS REGISTRY - The Red Cross has a national registry where you can call to report that you are safe. 800 RED-CROSS ...800 733-2767 - Thanks for this tip, Marlene

Jeff, We are looking at the same sky up here in Ventura County. Breathing is becoming difficult, my throat is burning, and my eyes are watering. We have not slept much because of the strong winds, but I guess that is nothing compare to the people who are in danger of losing their homes.

Good Grief.  Once breathing becomes difficult, it would seem time to leave and go to a safer place.

My heart goes out to your folks.  It was just a few days ago we were complaining about low water tables in Loudoun County Virginia and Frederick County, MD.

In retrospect, we're really very fortunate.  We really do not have serious natural disasters in my area.

Be careful.  Fire is very unpredictable.

Congratulations on 200,000.  Join the ActiveRain GoldStar Hall of Fame Group.

I'm sure Neal Bloom will send an invitation.

Thanks, Lenn. It is certainly worrisome since there are now 8 fires burning in the county and overall the situation is worse than it was 4 years ago. The winds are the big problem since they are spreading the fires more rapidly than the firefighters can control them. The water dropping helicopters are able to fly at the moment but earlier could  not.

Oh, and thanks for the congrats. :) Much appreciated altough not the center of attention right now!

Jeff,

Just heard about this one myself. So sorry to hear about William, I'm concerned for all of you. I'm not even close to any of the fires, but when I walked out this a.m. you could really tell it in the air.

Talking with fellow rainer Marlene last night (on her way home down 5 freeway) she said the Irvine fire looked like the entire hill was a blaze. And I would imagine staying off cell phones (unless necessary) would be a good thing for all of us.

As for the winds, I've lived hear all my life and when it comes to the Santa Ana winds, I've never experienced anything as strong as I felt yesterday. My heart goes out to all of you and the fire fighters, they do an amazing job. A pretty eventfull post for 200,000.

When things like this happen we can be sure our real buddies here at AR are on the phone. I spoke with Laurie right before she said she was going to call Brian. Jeff, I wish that this Post could have been one in which you got to celebrate reaching a major milestone here on ActiveRain of 200,000 points, instead of the tragity and danger that Southern California is under.

But you have rightfully concentrated on something far more important than "points" and personal milestones.  You have concentrated and shown concern for the danger that people are in and the lose of property and in some cases the lose of life that they will suffer.

Thank you for giving us updates on how some of the ActiveRain members in those areas are fairing, and it is my hope and prayer that you will not be added to the number of those that have had to evacuate their home and fear for their life as a result of these fires.

Diane - Thank you. The biggest problem we have in our area is the air pollution. The fire in San Marcos is pretty well contained so for now no danger here. Other towns south of us (Solana Beach, Del Mar, etc. are being evacuated primarily because the smoke in teh air is so bad.

I'll stay in touch. Thanks to everyone for your concerns!

I do fear for how this is going to affect our RE narket. This is truly devastating with so many homes destroyed. While the wind seems to be slowing a bit it will be days before this settles down, adn years before homes and landscape can be rebuilt.

I've been evacuated as well and I saw the San Diego Fires vs. 200000 points title of this post in my blog reader looking for current news about the fire and knew right away it was AR.

I had to click thru to see who the dolt was who actually published a title in such very poor taste.

In retrospect I am sorry that this was written here. It clearly has caused some strong feelings and it was certainly never intended to do that. Access San Diego - we are all on edge here, adn I think all are concerned about otheres welfare. Glad to see the information for others to make use of. The media has done a terrific job, IMO, of providing information that folks need to know throughout the day.

Oh, Elizabeth, I am so sorry. Please be safe and keep us posted. Send me a text message if you need to (760-840-1360).

I think people ARE taking things more seriously this time around, and they are doing a better job of keeping people informed. The communication systems seem to be making a big difference. So much can still happen since the winds continue and the fires are not under control by any means.

Still here, Laurie. Neighbors have been in touch with the fire company nearby and they said stay put for now unless the air quality was a big problem. Nothing is close by now but we are still watching. The road north was completely gridlocked before so we decided to stay here, but believe me we are watching carefully. Winds are a bit almer here but not so inland.

Jeff, it sounds like you need to get out of there. I spoke to William who got the call at 2:00 today to evacuate. He's over at Pont Loma at a hotel with the dogs (even though they don't take dogs-very resourceful). You take care and stay safe.

Gena - appreciate the thought. We are watching the news and staying in touch with people who know what is going on. William was quie close to fires, whereas the San Marcos fire is about 5 miles from our area and is now contained. Believe me, we are taking no chancee. We would probably head north as we understand there are no hotels anywhere in the county or even up in San Clemente. Our cats are calm at the moment.

Thank you, Roberta. We all appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers. The news reporting has been pretty good, and helpful to those who need to know what is going on.

Jeff you and everyone in Southern Cal are in my prayers.  I  absolutely LOVE San Diego and it makes me really sad to think of the damage.  I was just reading my San Diego Magazine, looking at Rancho Santa Fe homes!!!  I had heard about the Malibu fires, but not San Diego until my mom called me from Tucson today.  Our local news tonight said that it's suspected that some of the fires were started by arson?  Is that the story you are getting?  Be safe!

The effects of the fires go far beyond the immediate path, if my experience in the early 70's is any indication.

I was from the East Coast, and never experienced anything like that.  My husband's ship was deployed...  I had no one on the West Coast that I could turn to.  Even though my home was not in immediate jeopardy, it was the most frightening experience of my life.  The sky was completely black, the air was thick with soot, I had a small child with severe asthma that I couldn't take for medical treatment because it might make him worse to go outside, and I was afraid for his life.  For the same reason, I couldn't go out for groceries, baby formula or anything else.

Having experienced that, I know how frightening it must be for everyone there now, and you're in my thoughts and prayers.

Brad- than you for the kind offer. Not sure you can even get INTO San Diego from the north anymore. Yesterday the freeway was blocked except for military and emergency personnel. We are still here, fortunately, but the winds will play a huge in what develops today. Very gray sky and ashes floating through the air. All the schools are closed. Two of the fires are still ranging and moving very quickly but not sure about the others. It is supposed to be windy and in the 90s or even 100 today which dries it out even more.

Jeff- we have family in Scripps Ranch, we can't call because they have split up throughout SD- some to live out of their car, with their horses that have been evacuated to Del Mar stables, some living in their car, with the dogs and a cat! in the Mira Mar High School parking lot, and they all need to conserve cell phone batteries... so we sit and wait, trying not to watch the news...  a few hours ago all was as well as could be expected...

These updates from people like you, in the area, are tremendous to us as we send our thoughts and prayers in your direction.  Please keep updating as long as you can, and feel the love sent to CA from all over the country.

We are so thankful that the winds have settled down a little for now and they have made some progress with a couple of fires. This situation is unbelievable!  I just read that about 300,000 people in San Diego have been asked to evacuate their homes, and the Santa Ana winds are expected to pick up again today.  Both of my daughters live in San Diego, and their offices are closed again today, not because of fire danger in the offices, but because so many people are out either evacuating their homes, or trying to help those who have been evacuated.  People have been asked to stay off the streets, not use cell phones, and minimize utility usage.  Even those who are not in immediate danger from the fires are affected by this.

The winds are quiet here in Lake Forest right now, but the smoke smell is still very strong and my husband's car in the driveway is totally covered with ashes.  The actual fires got to within 5 miles of our home, but I never felt seriously threatened like those who live near brush-covered hillsides.  Our local schools are being used for evacuation, so they are closed again today.

Thank you for coordinating all this info, Jeff!  Stay safe, and pray for those who have been affected - we will survive and rebuild when this is over!

Vicki - thanks for the update. I hope your daughters are both safe. Same situation here - we are about 5 miles from the San MArcos fire which is now under control. But there is a lot of concern about Rancho Santa Fe since that fire is spreading and many homes are burning - about 7-8 miles from my house. Winds are quiet here but a mile or so inland they pick up dramatically.

If anyone needs a place we have room at our house. I have a jeep and can help with anyone who needs to move stuff, etc. Fortunately there are a good number of evacuation centers, but now they are running into the need for supplies and food.

Glad to hear you are well there.

UPDATE 12:20 PM Tuesday:

The ironies of the fires continue. Some areas that were evacuated are now allowing folks back into their homes - Del Mar area west oif I5 and Scripps Ranch. Other areas continue to evacuate, either on a voluntary or mandatory basis, and new fires keep popping up. The winds are still significant in many areas and have picked up some. They are doing some back fires, which use up the fuel and slow the advanging fires, and shifting winds in some areas are actually helping. They are also able to fly helicopters which can drop water and fire retardant.

Jeff, I was serious...always an open invitation to you and yours. The smoke/ash get's bad down here when we have the melaluca fires out west. The ash travels sometimes over 100 miles from the west coast to the east coast. I keep face masks and sometimes have to use them. Be careful and take care of your lungs...
