Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Support "Get The Trash Out Of The Splash"

Since 1987 Alabama has been part of the international efforts to remove marine debris from coastal waters.  According to the Alabama Coastal Cleanup website, volunteers have removed a total of 1,169,844 pounds of debris and cleaned 3,917 miles of coast during this time. The debris is not only removed, but it is studied to determine the causes and sources of debris in a region.

This year the Alabama Coastal Cleanup will be held on Saturday, September 17 from 8:00 a.m. - noon.  Here is contact information to help "Get The Trash Out Of The Splash" in  our local areas:

Volunteers are reminded to come prepared with sunscreen, hats, gloves, shoes, and lots of drinking water. You can see updates and more information on the Alabama Coastal Cleanup Facebook Page. The Coastal Cleanup is coordinated through the Alabama Department of Conservation. Several corporations, organizations, and municipalities have generously supported this cleanup event, and you can see a complete list of sponsors here.

Did you know that fishing line causes one of the worst debris problems?  Monofilament takes over 600 years before it begins to breakdown. During that 600 years, it can entangle fish, turtles, birds, mammals, and other wildlife. The line can also get tangled in boat propellers causing extensive damage. The line is dangerous to swimmers and scuba divers. When you are fishing, look for white PVC pipes at your favorite fishing spots along the coast and use them to discard your used and broken fishing line. You can also recycle used and broken fishing line at the Gulf Shores Marine Resources Office.
