Eliminating Common Electrical Fire Hazards from Your Home
We have gathered a list of electrical safety tips to share with you. Take a few minutes to check for these potential electrical fire hazards in your home.
· Check for the “electrical octopus” and avoid using power strips or extension cords in series, and ensure that all power strips have circuit breakers.
· Plug heavy appliances directly into wall outlets (not power strips or extension cords).
· Eliminate three-prong to two-prong adapters.
· Replace long-term use of extension cords with permanent wiring.
· Use heavy-duty extension cords for power tools (a light duty extension cord will become hot and can cause a fire).
· Avoid stringing extension cords under carpets or across high traffic areas.
· Replace broken or frayed electrical cords.
· Repair or replace faulty electrical appliances.
· Make sure outlets near water sources are GFIC (Ground Fault Interrupt Circuits).
