Many years ago, I cam across a story of a woman who was traveling the inter state who broke down and pulled to the side of the highway on a small short connecting road to get to a freeway. She got out of her car, popped the hood and stood there waiting for help. This was in the no cell phone days
WRONG HELP CAME AROUND
A group of free-roaming bikers passed her by and then circled and returned and pulled up behind her. She felt that this was not the type of help she was looking for and grew worried. Right away, they started asking her questions and her fear surfaced which is a signal to the harasser that they are getting through.
IT WAS GETTING WORSE BEFORE IT GOT BETTER
About the time of her weakest moment, another car was seen approaching and everyone relaxed except the woman who did not know how to call for help without starting more trouble. The approaching car was driven by a man who watched all this from a distance and formed some conclusions. He thought something wasn't right.
THE MAN ASSESSED IT CORRECTLY
As he slowed down to pass, he confirmed his suspicions by the look on the faces of the bikers and on the woman and quickly used his wits. He stopped his car and got out and started yelling at the woman saying he told her not to stop until she reached home. He then said he didn't want to hear any of her excuses and commanded her to get into his car right now speaking to her like they knew each other.
HE ESCORTED HER TO HIS CAR
As he escorted her to his car, he spoke out loud telling the bikers who were clearly thinking this through that his wife never obeys instructions as he opened the car door for her to get in yelling at her to do so. Forced laughter followed from the bikers. You could feel the tension in the air as they drove off.
TENSION RELIEVED
The women burst out crying and started thanking the man profusely. He broke down too and they both shared intimately glad both were okay. She went on to tell this story for the rest of her life. After reading this story, I became more aware of what was going on wherever I went.
