NEW CANDLEWOOD LAKE RECREATION - Stand Up Paddle Surfing (SUP) is an ancient sport that has been gaining in popularity recently as a fun recreational activity.  It’s basically a surface water sport, whereby the surfer stands upright on a board and uses a paddle to propel himself through the water. It’s a combination of surfing, canoeing and kayaking.

SUP - Walking on Water

Paddleboarding did not start our as a recreation - it was a convenient  way for instructors to oversee large groups of students learning to surf. The more modern form of the sport re-emerged in Hawaii with somewhat commercial overtones in the 1960's, when the so-called Beach Boys of Waikiki stood up on their boards to take photographs of tourists trying to surf.

Although the sport might look challenging, it is reportedly relatively easy to master in a short period of time - within an hour one can become comfortable enough to surf on his own. SUP has been attracting followers globally, promoted by celebrities and embraced by all age groups. It provides excellent core muscle and balance training and in spite of its seeming ease burns 400 - 1,000 calories per hour! Interestingly, women seem to be better adapted to this sport as they have a lower center of gravity. Fun, recreation, touring and fat-burning all in one! Successful Paddleboarding Lesson Completed

SUP is ideal for calm waters such as those of a lake. Candlewood Lake in Connecticut now has its own Candlewood SUP organization. One can enjoy private or group paddleboarding lessons or hire an instructor for parties.  One of the water communities in New Fairfield, Candlewood Isle, offered SUP 101 to its summer campers, who either live here or are spending their summer vacation on Candlewood Lake. All students passed and end of session fun-filled exhibitions were held, producing many feats such as head stands and  perhaps the first-ever Waka-Waka Dance on a paddle board.  For the more mundane enjoyment of the boards, it’s a wonderful recreation and a way to take in the beauty of the surrounding nature and explore little islands, inlets and water communities around the lake, as one leisurely tours and tones at the same time.

It's not too late to come up this summer for part of your vacation, or even as a day trip, to lovely Candlewood Lake, which is just over an hour from New York City. Olga - I did some paddle boarding up at Lake Tahoe and in Los Angeles with my kids.   It actually is a lot of fun, and you get a lot of exercise for your lateral muscles.    Harder if there are waves or wind.

Great Blog post!   Keep it up!
