Largest solar panel project in Maui County history is underway

This week Mayor Alan Arakawa announced that contracts have been awarded in order to install the largest solar panel project in Maui County history.  A wide range of people across the County government supported the idea and made it happen.  At least 1,000 photovoltaic panels will be up and running by the end of the year on these County properties on 3 islands (Maui, Molokai and Lanai).  This project will save taxpayers a lot of money since our electric rates are among the highest in the nation.  Alternative energy is alive and well on Maui.

The Maui County Solar Rooftop Project will install PV panels on:

  • 5 fire stations
  • 4 water supply facilities
  • 4 waste water facilities
  • 2 police stations
  • 2 senior centers
  • 4 park facilities
  • 4 public works baseyards.

Why does solar power in Hawaii seem like a no-brainer?

Next…harness the action of the waves to produce electricity. That technology still needs to be perfected.

That is great news for Maui!  I am with John... let's perfect some more technologies now!

John and Liz - there was a plan to have an energy producing "wave" machine off the north shore here, but the project is delayed since the device got "scuttled" at it's home base.  You would think it would be simple to create energy from waves, but I guess that's not yet the case, at least not for our waters.

Sounds like a very sound idea for your location, since you have such high electricity.  Hopefully, it will open the minds of more people and businesses to do likewise and keep the islands as pristine as possible, without any noticeable impact.

Way to go Hawaii!  Vermont is trying to go 90% renewable by 2050.  It would be great if all states tried to meet this clean energy challenge.
