I had a voice mail message yesterday from an agent I didn't know from outside my area.  She wanted to show one of my listings in Newmarket NH, which I was thrilled to hear!  Well, in the middle of the night, I woke up and realized I'd never called her back.  Oh how I hate waking up and realizing I forgot to do something like that. sad dog

This morning, as soon as I was up and about, I tried to call her office number that she left me, but her name wasn't listed in the office directory.  I tried going by her first name, to no avail, and then tried her last name, and again no luck.  Then I tried looking up that company's website, couldn't find that either.  So, I just figured I'd have to wait a couple of hours until their office opened up and I could actually speak to a real person.  I had been hoping to leave her a message so she'd have it first thing in the morning so she would know she could plan on that showing she called about.

It dawned on me shortly thereafter that I could try to find her through our state association website.  So I went there, and finally found her.  I was able to email her directly from our New Hampshire Association's website.  I told her the showing was confirmed, and I also apologized for not having called her back yesterday afternoon.  In that message, I let her know about her name not being in the office voice mail roster, and the various ways I'd tried to find her before hitting upon her email address.

She called me back this morning, and left me a wonderful voice mail message, thanking me for the extra efforts I went to to try to contact her, and for letting her know her name wasn't in the voice mail system.  She had no idea that it was missing as no one else had told her.  She thanked me several times in that same voice mail, and ended it by saying she was really looking forward to meeting me.  She said, "Ann, I hope I get the chance to work with you on a sale because someone who's diligent enough to go to the extra efforts you did must be a real professional to work with".  At the showing this afternoon, she told her buyers all about my efforts to contact her, and was very complimentary about me to her buyers.

You can imagine how that kind of message made me feel, and how it would make you feel to receive it as well!  I didn't think of what I did as extra effort, but she certainly did, and because of that, I received a really nice rainbowmessage from her, two actually - the voice mail message she left me and the things she said to her buyers at the showing - what a great little reward her message was!  A very nice way to start the day indeed!

Now, if she'll just bring me an offer on my listing......   ;-)

Ann

Now you know why you were our State REALTOR OF THE YEAR in 2004.

You go the extra mile even if you're becoming forgetful. Too much time playing in the rain but you are not all wet.

LOL

Thanks Jay

Jennifer ~ I hope you get your offer!  Thanks for stopping by my blog and for your comments.

Monika ~ Yep, it was a nice feeling getting her message and hearing what she said at the showing!

Linda ~ I hope I am!  I try to be the kind of person I'd like to work with and that my mom taught me to be......

Jay ~ OK, what did I forget now????  ;-)
I do find that I can end up spending too much time playing in the rain at times!!   So, is that really why?  ;-)))

Ann, I try to go out of my way to help  other agents.  I call them random acts of kindness.  Just last week-end I showed a somewhat remote (vacant) property where there was some serious water damage going on due to broken water lines from the freezing weather.  I immediately called the agent (Sunday afternoon) to ask if they knew about the problem and suggested they suspend any further showings until they analyze the situation.  They did.  They are already getting bids and working with their insurance company to get the home back in showing condition within 30 days.   I can only imagine what that home would have looked like in another few days had the problem not been discovered and reported.

Other agents know they can count on me to go the extra mile and, with few exceptions, they like working with me.  I think this gives me a slight edge if I'm in a situation with multiple offers on the table.

Keep up the good work!

I was wondering about the dog photo, but now I see it means 'dogged determination.' Great work using all of your resources to make it happen!

I really like reading positive ways that agents go the extra distance.

There are so many ways that we can help the other agent. Just remembering that they are not our competition, they are who we need to sell to.

Always try to work with agents that you like and respect and with you, Ann, you make that easy.

I consider myself the local MLS police.  I often call agents who may have inadvertantly listed their listing in the wrong area, have the wrong style listed or worse, the wrong city.  99% of them are greatful.  There is that 1% that is just having a bad day and decide  to punish the messenger.

It was amazing that you took the time to help another agent, considering the stories we all tell on slack agents....but if we all had an attitude like that, of wanting to improve each other for the sake of the industry and our buyers and sellers-we'd be the top of the 'most trusted' list instead of the bottom!  and i really love that she thanked you, instead of getting defensive.  sounds like two good people-and i really hope you get a cross-sale with her. =)

Ann, common courtesy wins again. I'm not surprised by her response. Kudos to you for doing the right thing! You made the effort to correct your mistake and corrected a problem she didn't know existed at the same time. That's how it's supposed to work!

Ann- I am sure many of us laughed at the first paragraph! I can even dream my work and sometimes wake up very hard like I already put in that days work!  It is wonderful you made the effort-we all agree- and that agent really needs to get Active Rain in her life to learn about self promotion! All the dead ends you got trying to reach her- wow- think of all the buyers/ sellers that wouldnt go that far!

Ann,

Great story. I hope she makes an offer. At least you have a new friend and admirer.  I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that wakes up in the middle of the night realizing something I forgot to do.

Good Luck!

Another example of a "secret agent" - albeit apparently an unintentional one.  Wonder how much business that has already cost her?

Great job on the follow-up.  Your tale reminds me that I need to add that to my list for future improvement.  Too much on the pile leads to overlooked follow-up.

Ann, the greatest message now is one to say, "I am faxing you an offer!" Good job being a professional. Things that we feel are rudimentary, sometimes never hit the radar screen with some folks so it's good to educate so that new agents will know what is expected. Good post and here's hoping for a quick and prudent offer!

By the way, is your listing in Listings by Address? If not, go there and stick it in!

Great story indeed. A little consideration in this industry goes a long way. It's a wonder why people don't do it more often.

Reading the first paragraph was like a breath of fresh air - YESSSSS!!!  I AM NOT THE ONLY CRAZY ONE IN THIS WORLD!!! ......all jokes aside, it's great to hear about the extra effort you went through, but even better to hear the response from the other agent.

"The Lovely Ann"

Love this post. I really do.

Way back when, I shared our Realtor Friendly Realtors with Active Rain Members. This is my point. Being nice. That's all.

You must be friendly and help others in this business as much as you can. It's a good way of marketing "YOU"...

The Realtor you did this for will never forget what you did. Never. Why? Because you proved yourself to be willing to go more than the extra mile. She will keep your listings in mind everytime she has a Buyer. :)

Thanks for sharing this story. These are things that make it all worthwhile. I'm sure many of us (I know I have!)  have done the same sort of forgetful thing, end up feeling embarassed and go out of the way to correct it (unfortunately it seems that many do not take this seriously as you did). All you can do is try to fix it, and fess up to your mistake and apologize. We're all human, and mistakes happen. It's not taking responsibility that makes it unacceptable.

Words of appreciation can mean so much. Margaret Rome is a master at that, through e-mail and by picking up the phone. Having a good relationship with another broker certainly makes a transaction easier.
