What You Focus On Expands

Measure What You Want
I recently gave an assignment to one of my coaching clients to do a weekly net worth statement and to track what her weekly income goals were vs. what she actually brought in. Since I had given her the goal, I decided to do it myself too. (I love being a coach – it keeps me on track too!) So I sat down and wrote up my net worth and income goals. And now I’m tracking them each week. By the way - this would be a good exercise for you to do too. But here’s the catch.

Feeling Good About Your Results
You have to feel good about the results you get – no matter what. Because what you focus on expands, you need to feel good about the results so that you draw to you more results to feel good about. I know, it seems counter-productive, but this is the way it works. For instance, this week, I was $1,000 shy of my goal. Now I could have focused on not having made that $1,000, but instead I gave myself a lot of credit for making as much of the goal as I did. The $1,000 shortage didn’t really come into play. I’m aware that it’s there and I’ll do better next week, but it’s not a factor in my emotions.

Focus on the Goal – Not the Obstacle
Now I know that your head may be hurting right about now. You might be thinking that this is fine for me, but if you didn’t make your goal, you’d be upset – and you have a right to be upset if you want. But does getting upset get you what you want? What we focus on expands. Therefore, getting upset creates more of getting upset. I’m not happy that I didn’t make my goal, but I’m not wanting to create more unhappiness in my life, so I focus on what I do want – a feeling of success. I feel that I was successful in creating the money that I did bring in. I also did my net worth statement for the first time in a while and it was significantly better than I had anticipated – so I focused on that success.

Creating Tomorrow
Since I am focusing on a feeling of success that is what I will create more of. Next week, I don’t expect to miss my goal. In fact, I expect that I will have to increase my goals over the coming weeks to keep me challenged to do better. When I set up my spreadsheet, I made sure that the goal was a changeable item from week to week to account for this expectation.

Setting Your Expectations
What are your expectations? Are they supporting your goals? I had to really check on the assumptions I made when I created the spreadsheet to track these things. Some of the assumptions supported me – others did not and I had to change them. Become conscious of what assumptions you are making about what is and isn’t possible.

Don’t Get Stuck in the “How”
Remember that you are only responsible for setting the goal and then taking action towards it – you don’t have to worry about HOW you will get there – that’s the universe’s job. Don’t get stuck in the “how”s, just move forward.

Set Your Goals And Target Emotions Today
So – what are your target goals and emotions? Before you close this email, close your eyes and just feel the emotions you would like to feel all the time. Would you like to be happy? Excited? Enthusiastic? Loved? Safe? Warm? Joyous? Successful? Free? Grateful? Whatever you would like to feel, close your eyes and just sit in that feeling for a while. Send it out as a blueprint for the universe. Then, whenever you think about it, do it again. Eventually, the blueprint that you’re sending out will come back to you and you’ll find you have more and more of those feelings in your life. Try it. It’s fun!
