Library Upper West Side

The Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan has a number of different New York Public Library locations.  The different locations each have different hours of operations and specific programs that they feature.  To get more information about library hours, go to the New York Public Library website.  Below are four of the more prominent libraries in the Upper West Side, the Bloomingdale Library, The St. Agnes Library, Riverside Library, and the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.

The Bloomingdale Library received its name from Dutch settlers who originally developed the area that was going to be known as the Upper West Side.  They called the idyllic area, "Bloemendaal," known to mean a valley full of flowers in their native language.  Bloomingdale was the name of the road that connected this once outlying area to the more concentrated southern section of Manhattan.  Bloomingdale Road is now known mainly as Broadway, one of the major streets in the Upper West Side and in all of Manhattan.  The library was originally built in 1898, called the Bloomingdale Branch of the New York Free Circulating Library.  In a few years this branch became a part of the New York Public Library system.  As you can see the Bloomingdale Library has a rich history and the location and contact information for the this Upper West Side library is below:

The next library is the St. Agnes Library located on Amsterdam and 81st St.  As it's name hints at this branch was originally a church library beginning in 1893.  Then expanding in 1894 to a neighborhood library.  Also in 1901, it became a part of the New York Public Library system.  It moved locations a few times in the neighborhood and in 1906 it found it's home that it currently uses.  Below you will find the address and phone number for this Upper West Side library.

Another Upper West Side library, the Riverside Library, was founded in the same time period of many of the other Upper West Side library's.  This time in 1897, the Riverside Library originated from a donation of books from the Riverside Location to the New York Library.  A few years later, also in 1901 like the other Upper West Side libraries, the Riverside Library became a part of the New York Public Library system.  Like some of the other Upper West Side libraries, this branch changed locations a few times.  The first time from a donation from Andrew Carnegie, a building was built at 190 Amsterdam Avenue.  That location remained for 87 years, until 1992 when it relocated to it's current location.  Below you will find the address and phone number for this Upper West Side library.

Great highlight of this historic library and its background Eileen, and people need to know where within the city they are located. Stay safe with the Hurricane.
