Unclaimed Money: Illinois calls it Cash Dash

By

Illinois wants to give back more than $1.5 billion in cash that it is holding.  This is money form numerous sources including, but not limited to bank accounts, safety deposit boxes, ucashed checks,  savings accounts, unclaimed deposits from utilities and properties and more.

The state has papers that list the names of those who have recently been added to the state's database.

The Cash Dash program was instituted to help reunite owners with their unclaimed property. On average, the Cash Dash program returns about $80 million annually to owners.

To get more details on the unclaimed property the treasurer’s office may be holding for you, or to find out if you have unclaimed property through Cash Dash, you can visit the treasurer’s website and click the Cash Dash link. You can also contact the Unclaimed Property Division by calling (217) 785-6998.

That's a great and wild idea, Jeffery.  It will be interesting to see how a few try to game the system.

Hi Josh,

This type of money stays with the state in perpetuity, which means forever.  The bad part is that the state doesn't pay any interest on the money in their possession.

The longer they have it, the longer they have use of the money.
