First Memories Of Kindergarten

Charles Buell has a contest about our First Memories Of Kindergarten, so I thought I would share mine.  As many of you know I was born in the Azores, which is a group of islands in Portugal, and my parents can to the United States when I turned 8 years old.  The island that I was born on was called Santa Maria, and we really did not have a Kindergarten there as it would be defined here in the US.

What I do remember about my first year of school was that there were multiple grades in the same room.  The only other thing that I remember was the teacher slapping me in the face.  I don't remember if the slap was meant for me, or if she swung at someone else who was smart enough to duck.  As you can see discipline in school there was handled much differently than it is here, and you did not come home and tell your parents, because that only resulted in another whack.

I do remember a little more about my few school years of school there.  The most memorable of these memories were of the school that I attended just before coming to the US.  Every day at noon you were given a bowl of warm milk, and a hefty table spoon of cod liver oil.  Boy or boy the memory of the cod liver oil is not one that will ever go away.  That stuff was nasty, and there were many times that I had to be given a second spoon full because the first did not stay down.  And OH YES everyone was lined up, and only one spoon was used.

I don't think I have to say it, but my children’s First Memories Of Kindergarten as well as my wife's are much different than mine ........... LOL.

I did not know you are from the Azores! All these years on AR... I never knew.

Funny kindergarten story...  kinda. I wonder what school is like there now.

George - OMG!!!  What a little cutie patootie!!!   On another note, I too remember corporal punishment in my school (circa early 70's) - so glad that it's been outlawed.

George,

I knew.

All I remember is that my friend Roddy Sayburn tried to grab something out of my desk and got his hand shut in it. She separated us thinking we wee fighting we drover he crazy never letting her know we were best friends.

Sadly that's the only menorie I have of kindergarden. I could tell stories of Eric's and Amy's.

George, I actually have a lot of memories of kindergarten, but warm milk and cod liver oil are not.

I've gotta disagree with Donna regarding corporal punishment in school.  We used to get the wooden paddle and it was a pretty good at keeping us in line and ultimately a better teacher than time outs or soft talking to...I think there are a lot of kids out there who need a little lot of butt smacking...just my opinion.

Hi George - That is a fun post.  Just thinking about kindergarten makes me think of so many things--I guess some things are just never forgotten.  I'm glad I didn't have to take cod liver oil daily, although for some reason I do know what it tastes like although I don't ever remember having it--I must have repressed the memory.

That does not sound like very happy memories of kindergarden George, LOL!  Cod liver oil....ugghhh...I have never had it, but it sounds deplorable!  I can't do this contest...I remember zero of my kindergarden years.  I just can't seem to pull anything up :)!  Oh well.

The only thing I remeber about kindergarten is the rug. We all had a rug of our own to put on the floor at nap time....that's it!

George - I have very vague memories of kindergarten and can recall one thing that I've never forgotten.  I'll have to check out the contest and maybe submit a post.

George, I do know you were born in the Azores, and I even know where they are. Being of the same Nationality, even though both of my parents were born in the US, I fully appreciate the thought of not going home and complaining about the teacher disciplining us. That was double jeopardy. Did that suit come with long pants?

George your story brought back memories for me too,  I remember the entire class getting caned just because the teacher was having a bad day and it had nothing to do with us:)

Hi George, great picture of you! For grammar school (though not Kindergarten), we were taught by Dominican order of nuns. And corporal puishment was definitely used. I stayed good then so I wouldn't get it with the ruler.

George -- I'm surprised you made it through that without some kind of traumatic stress syndrome.  Yikes! I went to a catholic school with some mean nuns who beat up the kids any chance they could get. It's amazing what they got away with.
