The hardest word to learn in real estate is NO.  When I read an agent say that they are available 24 x 7 I wonder why?  There are very few professions where it is expected that someone would drop what they had planned on a moments notice.  It's hard to set limits but when you do you will have a much more productive real estate career.

Via Bryant Tutas-Tutas Towne Realty, Inc:

Get off me!!Time. Mine is valuable. Is yours? One thing that agents struggle with is being in control of their time. How often have you popped out to show property at the last minute? Or had to cancel a personal event because one of your customer/clients needed to see you? What about the Buyer who can only look at properties every other Saturday from 4-7 pm? Do you work with them? I don't.

Here's a fact. There are NO real estate emergencies.

Here's another fact. You will NEVER be caught up. There will always be another call to make. Another website to update.

If you want to have lasting success in this business and avoid burn out you MUST get control of your time. Work by appointment only.

Don't let others dictate your schedule. Don't do same day appointments. Just let them go. It will save you a lot of aggravation in the long run. If people don't respect your time they will never respect the relationship. That's a fact.

Let folks know at first contact how you work and when you work. People will appreciate knowing these things up front. If your schedule doesn't fit with theirs then just let them go. We can't work with everybody.

Once you set boundaries with your time a funny thing will happen.....you'll start attracting people that will work within your time frames. And because of this you will be less stressed and you will become better at what you do.

Do you believe that? Well even if you don't it's still true. You just need to trust me on this one. Can you do that?

Do you need a new Broker?

Great Blog, Please keep me in mind if you ever have a referral. Just got back from the RE/MAX Brokers Convention. Fantastic event.

Oh... I agree with this so much!  However it is so hard to finally draw the line in the sand.  I will say the longer I have been in the business, the better I am about blocking my time.  But there are still days when I feel like I give in.  My family and personal time is just as important as my clients'.  It is frustrating though that the public has these 24-7 expectation from the Realtor community...like you said, very few professions have these unrealistic expectations set upon them.  Sometimes we have to be reminded to make time for ourselves too!

Cindy, Such a tightrope to walk between trying to provide stellar service and spending your entire career jumping through hoops.  We let our clients know for instance that if they're out of flyers, they'll be restocked by next day.  Now do we try to get them out same day if schedule allows?  Of course, but not if it requires "superhuman" effort and disruption of our entire schedule.

Kelly-clients have family and personal time.  They often ask us to work around their kids events or plans they have for the day.  It doesn't seem unreasonable for us to do the same.

Bliz-I think it is about setting expectations.  The more Realtors® advertise I'm available 24 x 7 and that our services are FREE FREE FREE the less respect we are going to get from the public.

Cindy, thanks for the reblog on this.  I've started telling people I am already booked on Sundays and sometimes on Saturdays.  If they really want to work with me, they will do it by appointment.

Kay-I don't understand the idea that an agent would decide to drop everything and run out the door when the phone rings. Good for you for setting limits on your time.
