Running in Maui - the long run

Running in Maui gives you lots of options for your long run when you’re training for a half marathon, a marathon or just trying to get or stay in shape.  We, especially me, are trying to get back in step.  After a leg injury last year and then winding up in ICU for almost a week with a lung malfunction coming back has been a slow uphill run, even when I’m running at sea level on a perfectly flat course.

But after weeks of slogging, jogging, walking and aching, this week I started to feel like I could run again.  So, even though we are taking a long weekend “off” and had a fabulous wine dinner presented by Franciscan Winery at Humuhumunukunukuapa’a, yes I can say it, the weekend long run was still on the agenda.

So, today we hit it.  We started at the Shops at Wailea and ran south past the ocean front hotels and the manicured golf courses.  We saw some pricy real estate and, if you are in the market for an oceanfront villa, the Aloha Potts Team will be happy to help you.  We passed the roadside vendors with fresh fruits and vegetables and the local version of roach coaches with their fish tacos and sugary drinks.

We stopped at various places to shoot video of our run on Maui.  You might enjoy it. Unlike Lahaina, Wailea has some little rolling “hills” and you go from posh hotels to very rural looking areas.  The weather was overcast with a little breeze, so comparatively cool, which we welcomed gladly.

We made the out and back in good time, met some fun people on the road.  One guy who was driving thought he was headed for the airport… WRONG!  A local roadside vendor offered us water and we passed other runners along the way.  We got back to the Shops at Wailea parking lot feeling energetic, which is good since our Maui Half Marathon is less than a month away.

Aloha, happy running to you and we’ll keep running in Maui.
