San Diego Festival of Sail,
September 2-5, 2011

Star of IndiaThe largest tall ship festival on the West Coast is just around the corner. Hosted by the Maritime Museum of San Diego, the annual Festival of Sail that takes place over the Labor Day weekend annually transforms the San Diego bay into a nautical museum and theme park. More than twenty tall ships, as well as other interesting vessels, from around the world are coming into town.

There is always a tall ship parade, accompanied by cannon fire, the day before the Festival of Sail, and this year is no different. The ships will enter the San Diego Bay and, after parading around for a while, dock at, or near, the Maritime Museum of San Diego on North Embarcadero. There usually is seating at the Maritime Museum but it goes fast.

Festival of SailWhen the Marime Museum says "Festival," they mean it. There will be musical performances throughout the three days featuring such entertainment as the Chicago Six jazz band, the Mó Wasabi's '60s inspired beach party music, and singer Eve Selis.

Children can enjoy a petting zoo, and their interaction with the animals always results in smiles and laughter for them and their parents. There will be tall ship cannon battles, treasure seeker pirate-themed bay cruises, over 100 arts and craft vendors, all sorts of food; a chance to go a round or two with pirates, and talk with visiting crew members from the other ships.

For a complete and updated list of the entertainment, see the Entertainment Page.

Jim,

Ok, these ships are amazing, but I was remembering back to the 1980's when Dennis Conner of San Diego was defending the America's Cup in Australia.

Best,

Steve

Steve – Conner defended the America’s Cup right here in San Diego, too!

Endre – Yes. I’ve been going for as long as I can remember them having them.
