Now, I know that this isn't a venue for a real inspection and I know there may be some liability issues with even commenting on just a photo without having seen the actual property, but I wondered if I could get a general idea about cracks in foundations.  I've heard there is a rule about vertical cracks and horizontal cracks - one being not as bad, the other being more of a problem.  What about a crack like this?  This is in a basement, beginning at one of the egress windows and going down to the floor.

Don't worry - there will be a complete inspection by an independent home inspector, and if anything is said in this post it will not be used as a formal answer to any questions or perceived as an actual inspection on a property, it's just a general question about cracks and what they may or may not mean for a property.  Thanks for your help!

Kasey and John, so this is a wall? My opinion here means absolutely nothing as we do not even have basements here in Texas. But, it seems to me as if it would be as much as a problem with earth backing into the wall as if it were the bottom foundation??? It doesn't look critical to me but it does look like it would require repair. I will have to check back on the comments to see if I've come close! Just guessing.

There are many answers to this question I would guess.  I will watch and see what they are.

We definitely don't have as many basements here in Idaho as they do in the midwest, but we do have some.  I hope some inspectors do weight in!
