Earthquake In Virginia 8/23/11 Felt on Long Island to Massachusetts

Here I am working from home when I thought my dog was scratching herself and I felt my table move. When I looked around and saw she was nowhere near me, I didn't think anything of it.

Then my husband called and says: "did you feel that?" Then I realized I wasn't losing my mind. I told him what I felt. It wasn't a shaking motion. It was more like, bump, bump, bump, bump to me.

I have to say I feel a little on edge. I sent a mass email to the agents in my office and everyone said that they had to leave the building. Their desks were shaking. I didn't feel it to that degree in my home office.

Right now they are saying it's a 5.2 preliminary magnitude. Parts of the Pentagon and White House were evacuated according to the news.

Long Island had an earthquake last year that was off the coast of Southampton. I didn't feel a thing that day.

Hi KKBrown, I wasn't sure what it was even after I realized it wasn't my dog making the table move. Then when my husband called, I was relieved that it wasn't my imagination, lol. Then when I saw the news, I got a little nervous. Never experienced any type of a quake before. It will be ok :)

Wow!  Stay safe Jackie!  A lot of my friends here in Fort Wayne say that they felt it but I didn't feel a thing.

We felt it big time here in Northern VA, but I'm not surprised that you felt it as well.   I was a nervous wreck after.  Calm now...finally.  This is not our thing on the east coat.

I know C, it was unsettling. At least they said we do not have to worry about a Tsunami.

Jackie - Looks like I missed out....had lots of friends and family who felt it  in nearby areas but it somehow bypassed where I was today.  Glad to hear that you're okay.

Jackie - Buildings were evacuated in Fairfield and Bridgeport, but I was working on my computer at home at the time and have to admit I didn't notice a thing.

Jackie, I really didn't know the East Coast has earthquakes. My East Coast friends always told me how they feared moving to CA because of the earthquakes. I hear there is a hurricane forming out there too. Be safe out there! :)

Jackie  We live about 45 minutes from the epicenter.  Our house rumbled, but there was no damage.  We've lived on the west coast for years and take shakes of this level as minor annoyances.  The concern in eastern cities is there are no earthquake construction codes in our high rise and historic buildings such as the White House and Capitol building

Hi Donna, It was mild but it sure did make me feel unsettled for a little while. Glad you didn't feel it.

Hi Gail, I wasn't sure what it was at first. I really thought it was me. Glad it wasn't, lol.

Hi Alan, We never get earthquakes. We had one last year off the Atlantic coast and residents in the Hamptons felt it. I never did. Yesterday I did and it was such a weird feeling. I bet you Californians are "laughing" at us, lol. I'm just glad it wasn't a larger one. Not sure where the hurricane is going to hit just yet. I have to say, Long Island is due for one!

Hi Karen, I saw on the news that the Capitol building sustained some foundation cracks? I could be wrong. You are right. The East Coast of the  U.S. does not have earthquake construction codes. Long Island would be a mess but the 5 boroughs would be so much worse if we had a bigger earthquake. Long Island would be a sitting duck for a Tsunami. Now that is scary.

Jackie-glad you didn't have any damage at your home.  They are inspecting a crack in the Washington Monument and it appears the National Cathedral sustained a good deal of damage.  Fortunately it has been 100 years since our last VA earthquake and with luck it will be 100 years before the next one.

Hi Cindy, I had heard on the news about the Washington Monument. Hopefully you are right and we won't have to have an earthquake again!
