In the quest to build the perfect blog, I find myself in interesting situations where I can't think of a thing to write about. However, there are other times where I have too many things that I want to write about. I have learned to ration my "flood of ideas" to balance out my "idea deserts" by writing everything down in a "Blog Journal" that I carry with me - in my car, at work, at home... Anyway, as I was sitting in my car, waiting for my kids to get out of school, I came up with a whole list of Blog-Building post ideas, and thought that I would share them with you.

These particular ideas are for building Local Content - a great resource for any relocating clients that may want to move to your area, or newer residents that just want to know more about their home. (In addition to this list, you really should check out Kristal Kraft's blog, as she is the Queen of local content.)

Tours- What a great way for you to check out your own town and meet people! Take your camera and a note pad and head out!

  • Coffee Shop Tour - Sure, there's Starbucks ... If you have time and space, mention those because I guarantee there is someone out there reading your blog that has to have their half caf venti iced caramel macchiato ... BUT ...What about those local spots? You know, the places that have live music from time to time? The places that have local magazines lining one wall and at least one college kid in dread locks foaming the milk? Give an "insiders look" to where the locals like to get their cup o' joe. Take pictures of the building, and even one of the barista-masters. Maybe even a shot of the owner! (Be sure to tell them where you are posting this info...small business owners love free publicity, and are bound to tell people about it!) Make notes of when their live music shows are and what their specialties are. Include anything else interesting about the coffee shops - and maybe even a map.
Other ideas for a tour like this may be: Pizza Joints, Greasy Spoons, "dive bars" ... anywhere people like to hang out and be social.
  • Historical Monument & Landmarks Tour - Take yourself on a field trip and learn more about the historical monuments in your area. Take pictures. Make a photo journal of the monuments with information on each one. If a group of them are in walking distance from each other, create a printable map and include historical facts, places to stop and eat (or get a cup of coffee...) and your information.
Other ideas for a tour like this may be: "Great Playgrounds"  or Museums & Art Galleries
  • Local Biz (Business) Tour - We all want to support our local businesses, right? What a better way to do this than to feature them in a post on your blog! Make an effort to meet the owners. Take pictures. Make a point of telling your readers why these businesses are better than the national chains. Besides being local ... what unique things or services do they offer that make them successful? Again, make sure you tell the owners where you are posting this information!
Be sure to consider restaurants, grocery stores, boutiques, book stores (if there are any left), bars, music stores, gift shops, salons and even gas stations.

General Information - Here are some topics to consider to make your Local Content more robust.

  • City Biography - Who founded your city? What important people, over the years, made it what it is today? Are there any famous or infamous people from your city? Who were some famous lawmakers? Who are some controversial lawmakers today? Who runs the city, now? Who sits on the city council? Who are your local heros?
  • General History - Create a timeline. Those of you in older cities may want to "skim" for the most important events. Some questions to consider: Are there military forts that played a part in any war? When did your city become a city? What major events happened in your city - local or national? Who was the founder? What was the reason your city was founded?
  • Little Known Facts - Most Chambers of Commerce's will have a resource for "little known facts" about your city. These are quite fun, especially if you can accompany them with a photo or two.
  • Community and Seasonal Events - A neighboring town to Colorado Springs, called Manitou Springs, has an annual Emma Crawford Coffin Race down the main street. There is a great story behind this tradition - one that always gets a "wow!" from the reader. What community events does your city participate in? What seasonal events to you look forward to? Are there Farmer's Markets? Is there an annual ice-sculpting or sandcastle building contest every year? What parades march down your main street? Is your city known for your great ________ ? (We love to go to Palisade, CO for the annual Peach Fest...) What makes your community unique? What would a relocating person or family look forward to doing?

Hopefully these will help nudge you out of your writers' block and into your community. In putting together a comprehensive local content section to your real estate blog, you are bound to attract potential clients, as well as put yourself in front of some very prominent people in your community - what a great opportunity!

Really good post.  We all get that bloggers block, but there truly is tons of local content in every market.

Your coffee shop tour idea reminded me of a recent experience I had.  I went into a local mom and pop cafe I had blogged about and they asked me what I do for a living.  I told them I'm a realtor.  They asked if I'm the realtor who wrote about them on the internet?  They found my blog article I had written about them and really appreciated it.  I get extra special service when I go in there now!

Super, Mariana.

A few weeks ago I started a post about a local artist.  It will take me a while to get this one done.  He is a famous sculptor, and I went around town and took pictures of some of his pieces.  I'm putting a real estate twist on it by featuring a picture of his former home.  You have just reminded me I need to get back to that post.

Great job!

A great way to focus on local content, be seen in the community, and become even more of an expert. By actually seeking out and blogging about these local topics, we'll be far better equipped to answer the 'Where's the nearest ...' type questions knowledgeably with lots of details. And as your reputation grows, pretty soon you'll overhear people saying 'I read about it in Derek and Mariana's blog!'

Maureen- Thanks, and good luck with your artist project.
Carole- Good morning to you, too! Thanks!
Mary- What a great link! I will keep him in my prayers.
Suzanne- It's all about how you deal with bloggers block (thanks Carol!) - Don't let it frustrate you- make it motivate you!
John - ooh! I'm waiting for that day...!

Mariana, I will be driving and come up with an idea for a blog, and the nearest thing to write on is usually a gas receipt or something like that....LOL

Some of best ideas have been when I am stuck in a traffic jam.

My last Post got outlined on the back of one of these receipts, I guess I should keep a pad in the car, it might be easier to find what I wrote later.

Monika- Yep! I always have my camera with me, too! You never know when a "personal field trip" is in order!

TLW- Go get em!

George- Yes, before my notebook, I often found myself writing on gas receipts and Starbucks receipts! I agree - aome of the best ideas come when you are a "captive audience" - !

Great post, Mariana!!  And you caught me out on some of my future plans, too.  Someday soon I'll be posting about a local playground and I've planned to hit a new coffee shop with a friend of mine.  Love the business tour idea, too.  You've given us loads of "blog fodder"!  Thanks!

Hi Sarah - The playground tour is one I am looking forward to this Summer w/ my 2 kids. They will love that Mommy's "work" requires us to visit a bunch of playgrounds...!

LOL!  Yes, just the other day I was asking my husband, "Where could we go this summer?"  and what I meant was, "What would be a good place to blog about?"  He saw right through me!

I'm glad you posted this in this new group...I missed it the first time around.  You have some really great ideas, and it's awesome of you to share them with all of us.  Jim has a culinary degree, so we've been thinking about doing lots of restaurant reviews.  We always get asked what the best ones are, so it seems like a worthy topic.

What a great post!  I'm so glad the Localism group started.  I see this was written in December and that was before I joined or even started blogging.  Thanks for the helpful information.  We moved away from Colorado 12 years ago but still visit quite often as my family is still in the Denver area.

Sarah- Love what you do - and do what you love! (Then blog about it!)
Jim and Maria- Ooh! Derek (that one guy in my profile pic w/ me... :o)) was a chef in his pre- RE life. We love restaurants...
Marchel- We move TO Colorado in 1994. I am so happy that Sarah got this started too. Sometimes it is hard coming up w/ new info ...

Wow! Mariana, for some reason, as a newbie, my blogging to do list was (a) practice on other people in the real estate community then (b) blog locally. Part of this is because I'm a 'fraidy cat and secondly, because I didn't know where to start. Thanks for all the great material!

Mariana,

Never saw this post when it came out. Glad Sarah did this. Would like to know about the Emma Crawford Coffin race though!?! Or is it on Localism already?

Irene- Im glad that this could be helpful! I am working on another brainstorming list for the group as well...
Karen - Hi! I DO need to do a post about that race. I am going to wait until the next time it happens - then I can supply pictures too!

Mariana,

What a bunch of great ideas....Love the coffee shop idea! AS for local Landmarks - most visitors (new to the Springs) probably would have 'something' to say about the statue of Gen. Palmer in town....

Sabine- Have you been here long enough to see what the Palmer HS kids DO tothat horse and Gen Palmer every year? I used to work for Palmer HS and they always have a heyday.

Michelle- Athens? I had some friends from Athens. They told me that was where Michael Stipe lived/lives. Still true?

Went back to my site to review the neighborhood page I already have up...guess what the title is? "Verde Santa Fe Home Tour, Cornville Az". So I was already on that track without really thinking it through.

I don't know that I would have made the leap from homes to coffee shops though....and art galleries...and and and the possiblities are myriad!

Thanks again for the 'spark'.

Thanks for the ideas. It sparked a thought to blog about the local restaurants. There is a fundraiser for The Carousel at Pottstown, of which Donna is a board member, each year called the Culinary Festival. It showcases the local talent and we could build on that. Now that I'm thinking about it we could move right from an events blog to restaurants easily.

I was also thinking about writing of the trail system running through much of the area. Soon Montgomery County hopes to have public trails within a half mile of every resident. That seems to be a big attraction to people here.

NOOB: Wow, there are some great ideas in here! I know I am taggin on late, but . . .

Idea: Cover the local graduations - for your kids school, and if possible, in the area you consistently work in. I'm sure the kids would love to go to a site where they can see photos of the event. Post the weekly calendar for your area schools (I know folks who always lose theirs and call all over to find out what is going on that week.)
