If you ask for an opinion from someone, accept it graciously whether or not you agree with it!

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

If you ask for an opinion from someone, accept it graciously whether or not you agree with it!As one of those “go-to” guys in my community, I am often asked my opinion about different matters ranging anywhere from where to eat to how I rate specific tech services.

And I love the fact that what I think is considered to have some merit. I guess that being a grizzled old journeyman does contribute to an aura of authority.

But why in the world would anyone ask for your take on a subject and then argue with you if they don’t agree? An opinion is just that …an opinion. It’s what I think.

I don’t want a debate. I don’t want to prove my point beyond a reasonable doubt. It’s just happens to be the way that I feel about a particular topic.

So whether or not you agree with me, please accept my opinion graciously.

And take it for what it’s worth!

I have to laugh because it happens so often, it like some people are programed to argue.

Connie...

Now if they asked "are you up for an argument?" that would mean that they already knew your opinion and wanted a good debate! Thanks my friend.

Mike...

Or they try to change your mind. Wow! THX.

Brian...

They want validation, and when they don't get it, their defense mechanisms kick in. Thanks.

Richard, there are so many people that really don't want our opinion but rather a reaffirmation of their own.

Have you ever had some one stop and ask you for directions, and when you give it to them, they argue with you that it can't be correct?  Kind of the same thing.

When I ask for someones opinion, I am usually looking for a different perspective. I will mull it over and the opinion will help me to decide what to do. It is definitely not always the best way to do it, it is just information and another viewpoint.

Good morning Richard,

I agree with Gabe. Many are not looking for your opinion just a reaffirmation of their own. They just want to justify their way of thinking :).

Good morning, Richard....if it's a controversial subject, I avoid arguments....they lead nowhere....sometimes it's better to give an answer that's not an answer!!!  just like a politician.

If someone gives me their opinion after I ask for it, I never argue just accept.  But when someone asks me their opinion and they don't like what they hear, they want to argue.

Great post Richard.

The best way for someone to expand their consciousness is to ask the opinion of someone who you know has a different opinion then you.

I agree with you but know that there are so many people out there who just feel like they have to cram their opinions down your throat.  And, don't you just love those people who are always right?

Oh yes, this is common sense, but apparently common sense is not very common at all.

Richard, I'll only give my opinion if its to someone that I think will respect it.  There are all too many people around that think their way is the only way and just want affirmation that they are right.  THey're not interested in anything that may differ from what they have to say.

A great post and unfortunately so true.  As Lenn Harley says why waste everyone's time by arguing write your own blog with your point of view, simple solution.  But, the "arguing" won't stop the folks who do it.  They may feel they are debating but it is definitely not the same thing.

My guess is that it is simply human nature, and for many having the last word or otherwise showing that they feel they know more is important. We get this often when agents ask for feedback. Hey it's my feedback, or my buyer's, isn't it.

And it's certainly true in all other aspect of life, not just the RE biz.

People are always looking for someone to support their own position.  And when you do not provide the reassurance, the challenge arises!
