Slidell, LA

The town of Slidell was established on November 13, 1888, although Slidell's real beginning came with the railroad in 1881. Local railroad workers lived in the area and greatly contributed to its growth, development and local economy. The original town city limits were composed of 2,320 acres of L shaped land. The city of Slidell was named after John Slidell, a U.S. Senator and confederate officer. In 1889 the city's first jail and mayors office was constructed and by 1909 Slidell had its first graduating class of 4 seniors. By the 1960's Slidell was one of the country's fastest growing cities, more than doubling its population from 14,000 to 30,000.

Today Slidell has become the largest city in St. Tammany Parish with a population of over 27,000 people and a median home cost of around $138,000. The city is located on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain and ideally situated on interstates 10, 12 & 59. Slidell is just a very short drive to New Orleans however far enough away to maintain its own identity. Being only about 25 miles north of New Orleans residents of Slidell get to experience the best of both worlds. The Saints, French Quarter, Jazz Fest & world famous Mardi Gras in New Orleans and the small town charm and appeal back home in Slidell.

For the lovers of the outdoors Slidell is truly a paradise. Being situated on Lake Pontchartrain and The Honey Island Swamp it has tons of opportunities to go fishing, boating, water skiing, hunting, crabbing, shrimping or just enjoy the beautiful scenery through its endless supply of breathtaking landscapes.
