New Orleans, LA
New Orleans was founded in 1718 by Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, sieur de Bienville, and named for the regent of France, Philippe II, duc d'Orleans. It remained a French colony until 1763, then was transferred to the Spanish. In 1800, Spain ceded it back to France then in 1803, New Orleans, along with the entire Louisiana Purchase, was sold by Napoleon I to the United States. New Orleans was the site of the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 during the War of 1812 and on April 25,1862 fell during the Civil War.
New Orleans is located in southeastern Louisiana, nestled between the curve of the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. Because most of the city was built on the great turn of the river it's known as “The Crescent City.” New Orleans has a somewhat tropical climate with its coldest months being in January & February with temperatures rarely going below freezing and the warmest months being July & August with temperatures in the 90's. The population of New Orleans has dropped since hurricane Katrina to about 336,421 people according to the 2010 US Census.
New Orleans is home to The Saints, Super Dome, French Quarter, Jazz Fest, fantastic restaurants, architecture & the world famous Mardi Gras to name a few. New Orleans is a city like no other, its a melting of many different cultures, backgrounds and definitely has a feel all of its own. Every day is a new experience in the Big Easy and a wonderful place to visit or call home.
