Hurricane Irene & Maryland: Gov. O'Malley declared state of Emergency

By

This afternoon Gov. Martin O'Malley has declared a STATE OF EMERGENCY in preparation for Hurricane Irene.

"Maryland must prepare for potential destruction and minimize the threat to public safety."

Ocean City, MD has now been ordered to evacuate - the last time this happened was in 1985

Annapolis and Baltimore City began handing out sandbags this afternoon... more info via Baltimore Sun

Maryland residents are being advised to stock up on supplies to last at least 72 hours

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do take this seriously. It's been awhile since the last major Hurricane hit our area and some people tend to forget how destructive one can be. As a military spouse I naturally listen to clues from the Military: the Navy has ordered all its ships in the Hampton Roads, VA area out to sea - This hurricane is not to be taken lightly! A Category III can produce winds up to 130 mph and cause extensive damage!

Do check your emergency supplies:

flashlights
batteries
battery-powered radio
non-perishable food/water
diapers
working fire extinguisher
water-proof container to store important documents (home owner's policy, car insurance etc.)
list of important phone numbers
first aid kit

Do check your home and yard:

make sure downspouts and gutters are clean
store outdoor furniture inside or secure tightly (that includes trash cans, potted plants etc.)
trim trees and shrubs
on Saturday, make sure you close all blinds or shutters if you have them (to minimize impact of flying glass)

Do not panic but prepare and stay informed:

Do you know your area's evacuation route?
Do you have somewhere else to go if necessary?
Do you have a family emergency plan in place?

PLEASE STAY ALERT AND FOLLOW THE NEWS!

Hi Amy, thank you! This is a big one. The last one was Isabel 7 years ago .. I lived in Norfolk at that time and remember having to go without power for a week and hiding in the powder room as this was declared our safe area at times of tornado warning. .. Never say never .. I didn't think we would have an earthquake around here!

No one should be brushing this off.  It's not often we get hit with a Hurricane in our area.  Isabel in 2003 was the last time.  I was definitely not happy when she was passing over.

Hi, Andrea -- you have done a good public service and I hope that you and yours will be safe and well.  I have some relatives in Long Island NY and it seems strange to hear that it could hit that area head on (since it is so rare).  I will keep you in my thoughts

Absolutely Kenneth, or prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Thank you and you do the same!

Eric: thank you.. by the looks of it, we are going to need it!

Thank you, too, Mona: I know exactly what you mean. A few minutes after the Earthquake I immediately thought of Mike Cooper in Winchester, VA .. I was close but he was way closer. What a relief it was to hear how incredibly lucky we all were. I hope that will hold true for this weekend as well. Needless to say I wont be showing houses this Sunday! I'm preparing for losing power but will try to update as soon as I can. Thank goodness for Smartphones (as long as those towers hold)!

Hi Andrea, great post. Irene still looks like she's the biggest storm we have yet to see and everyone should take this seriously! I live in an evacuation area; (el. 12'), and am getting ready to move to higher ground today. I hope we all get through this with the least amount of damage possible!
