Stanislaus County Short Sales - EARTHQUAKES IN CALIFORNIBefore The EarthquakeA

Earthquakes have been in the news the last couple of days.  There have been quakes in Colorado, California and of all places Virginia.  Everyone knows that earthquakes happen in California all the time.  Most of them are too small to feel.  But every once in a while we do feel one.  I know I will never forget the day the Loma-Prieta quake hit in October of 1989.  There have been a few others that I have felt.  Luckily I have never been near where the damage was done in an earthquake.

Of course nobody knows when or where the next earthquake is going to hit.  After the EarthquakeIf you go to the USGS Earthquake map you will see that there are earthquakes going on just about every day.  In the United States most of the earthquake activity is in California and Alaska.

The good news is that there are things you can do before an earthquake hits to lessen the damage.  If you bought a home in California you should have received a booklet called "Homeowners Guide to Earthquake Safety".  You did receive one didn't you? If you didn't or you are not sure if you did and you want one give me a call and I can send you one or email you one.  There is lots of information in this booklet about what to After the Aftershocksdo before during and after a quake.   One very important thing to know is how to turn off the gas in case of an earthquake.  Do you know were your gas meter is and how to turn it off?  Check out the booklet and you will.

Luckily the earthquakes we have had here in the U.S. this week haven't caused a lot of damage and no deaths.  We may not be so lucky next time.  Hopefully we now realize that it's not just a California issue, that earthquakes can strike just about anywhere and anytime.  Take a little bit of time and be prepared for the next one.

The above pictures were taken from the booklet "Homeowners Guide to Earthquake Safety."  The pictures are of a house in Coalinga Ca and show the destruction caused by the Coalinga Ca Earthquake of May 2, 1983.
