Attorney and Lawyer.. Is there a differance??

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Champions 01225479

I was recently trying to help a client with legal advise and suggested to him that he get an attorney and he said what about a lawyer?

So that prompted me to find out what the differences are for the sake of being able to have clarity for my clients.

Attorneys & Lawyers

Lawyer- a person whose profession is to represent clients in a court of law  or to advise or act for clients in other legal matters.

Attorney- A person admitted to practice law in at least one jurisdiction and authorized to perform criminal and civil legal functions on behalf of clients.

I've heard those with a law license call themselves: Attorney, Legal Counsellor, Lawyer, Esquire, Barrister.  I've heard others call them many other things.

James, just like Daniel I've heard them refer to themselves in many ways too. Counselor at law has me befuddled.  Would we be counselors at Real Estate?

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Not all attorneys are lawyers, but all lawyers are attorneys.  When someone is granted power of attorney, they can correctly say thet they are an attorney in a narrow context, but they are not necessarily lawyers.  I think an attorney at law is a lawyer.
