Many of us who live on the East Coast of the US have been watching the projected path of Hurricane Irene. The projected path is expected to have impacts on Maryland and the Washington, DC area. As of the most recent update, a tropical storm warning has been issued for Upper Marlboro, MD. The effects are expected to begin to be felt in our area by Saturday afternoon, 8/27/2011.
The time to prepare for this hurricane is now. Some things to have on hand:
Water - bottled water for the family to drink. Fill up bathtubs to use to flush toilets, etc if you lost water.
Non-perishable foods
Toiletries
Week's Supply of Medication
Flashlights & batteries
Battery powered radio
Fully charged cell phone
Corded telephone
Full tank of gas
I lived for over 3 months without power following Hurricane Gilbert in 1988. As you can imagine, it was not fun. One of my suggestions based on that experience is to have some board & card games on hand to keep children from getting too bored and antsy.
One of the most important safety concerns is to stay off the roads during the storm. Stay indoors away from windows.
Be safe as we ride out what has been a very crazy weather week here.
