Celebrate the Day- I Can Vote Thanks to Our Mothers and Grandmothers.. AND Let's Not Forget Our Favorite 4 Legged Friends!

WomenIt's another day to celebrate and today is Women's Equality Day.  Did you know that women did NOT have the right to vote until 1920 when the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was passed giving us the right to vote?

That is less than 100 years ago... not all that long.  Today we take it for granted that a woman can pilot a plane; be a medical practioner beyond being a nurse; run a Fortune 500 company; or take a trip into space.

It was the late Congresswoman Bella Abzug who lobbied for this day to be designated as Women's Equality Day.  We can thank those women who peacefully marched in the streets and dared to apply to Medical Schools AND entered into the world of selling Real Estate for all of the opportunities we have today!

And where would we be without our 4 legged friends... our dogs.  Today is also National Dog Day.   (this one's forlucky
you Toni Weidman!)  Today we want to call attention to our friends who love us no matter what.
They are at the front lines of battle; they give us endless love and joy; they help us when we are challenged physically and play with us when there is no one else.

If you know of someone looking for a pet, please send them to your local shelter.   If you see one being mistreated, do something!  And, if you're lucky enough to have one of your own... give him or her a great big hug and their favorite treat... after all.. it's their day!!

Kathy - I still can't believe it was less than 100 years ago that women couldn't vote - that sounds so ridiculous today! I'll be treating my Lucy to an extra long walk, off leash through the woods today in honor of National Dog day, especially with Irene bearing down on us - she might be housebound for a few days!

Thank goodness we're here now and not way back then, Kathy. I would have been one of the women trying to get the vote passed. And, thank you for the mention. It is National Dog Day and I am working on a post about it now.

PS-sorry the cat didn't want to leave Susan's blog. He can be very stubborn at times. But he has a good home.

Kathy,

Amen to that.   What a wonderful thing to celebrate, and I cried when I saw the dog and the coffin pix.  It is a moving moment and still brings tears to my eyes. A

Well, no wonder women and dogs are some of my favorite combos!!! Didn't know it was National Dog Day. I was going to look at the dog video, but as soon as I saw the first part, my eyes already welled up, so as it was trying to load, I decided, better NOT, because I will become a puddle on the floor (not THAT KIND!!--HAHA).

My mother-in-law has always said she wants to come back as one of my dogs. A great compliment.  And yup, all dogs ought to be spoiled (in a good way) and

As usual, I had no clue these holidays even existed.  There's only one dog in my life currently, my granddoggie, Monkey.  Happy Dog Day to Monkey!

I was reading Toni's blog and happened to see the reblog on your post.  I did give my chocolate lab, Zeke, an extra biscuit today for National Dog Day, as well as a bath, and played fetch...and of course another biscuit.

Kathy,

We have so much to be thankful for, cry for, jump for joy for, and we definitely need more people in Washington to make better opportunities for women.

I saw that video before and it broke my heart.

What a great post! I just love your creativity.

Toni= I had to do a double take when I saw your cat over there!!!  And, I could just see you marching.

Alexandra- me too, in fact I watched it once but can't bear to watch it again.

Joanna- it is so sad and touching and yes... it brought tears to my eyes.

Gayle- take my word for it, you would be crying.. a lot.  Did I tell you I love your new pic!!!

Sharon- I'd have no clue either.  Thank goodness for the Internet.

Rebecca - good for you! I'd bet Zeke thought it was his birthday!

Patricia- Thank you...  we do have a lot to be thankful for but we still have some work to do!
