Hurricane IreneBy Kevin Korber of Village Confidential

All of New York City is preparing for the worst as Hurricane Irene is predicted to make landfall in the city this Saturday evening. Residents are expected to experience high winds and heavy rainfall. The city and state have both declared a state of emergency and have encouraged residents who live in danger areas to move to designated hurricane shelters.

West Village residents should take extra care as most of the West Village has been designated as a danger area for possible flooding. West Village residents on Washington Street by the Hudson River have been ordered by the mayor’s office to vacate the area by 5 p.m. on Saturday; the rest of the West Village is also marked as a danger area for the wrath of Hurricane Irene, but no evacuation order has been made yet.

Those who have been evacuated can go to one of two nearby hurricane shelters: Baruch College on 25th Street and Park Avenue South, and Seward Park High School at Grand Street and Ludlow Street. For more information and a detailed map of areas endangered by Hurricane Irene, go to www.nyc.gov.
