An Essential Earthquake Country Tool

Reblogger Maureen McCabe
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

Did you feel the earthquake last week?  I did NOT.   I believe I was at home sitting at the computer when the earthquake happened.   The first inkling I had was a friend in West Virginia saying something online.  I looked then on Twitter and Facebook and saw people in Central Ohio saying they felt the earth move.

I turned on the TV and local news said buildings in downtown Columbus swayed when an earthquake occurred in Virginia and shook neighboring states...  and their neighboring states.   Us.

This is from a California real estate agent.  Lloyd shared an "essential earthquake tool"...  of course being in California he is in Earthquake Country.  Let's just hope it's years before we feel another earthquake in Central Ohio.  Or don't feel an earthquake as the case may be.   Thanks Lloyd Binen in Earthquake Country (California)  for allowing your post to be Re-Blogged.    Thank God the tremor last week caused no damage here.  Thank Goodness we are NOT in Earthquake Country...

Weather is local...  an old, old post. Do you prefer tornadoes?  Hurricanes?  Earthquakes?   Earthquakes and real estate are local too.

Wordless Wednesday; An Essential Earthquake Country Tool

The red tool is a gas meter wrench.  It's positioned on the gas valve.  The wrench has different sized openings to accommodate different size valves.  When the wrench is pushed downward, the valve is rotated 90 degrees which stops the flow of natural gas into the house.  Shutting off the gas prevents gas leaks and explosions from pipes ruptured during an earthquake.

Every homeowner in California, and perhaps elsewhere, should keep a gas meter wrench next to their gas meter in case an earthquake ruptures a gas line.

Recently, on large commercial buildings, I've noticed gas meters equipped with a seismic device which I believe automatically shuts off the gas flow if ground shaking is detected.  That's a great idea because the occupants may not be present or able to manually shut the gas off.  I haven't looked into their cost.

Amazing how our planet is changing. Same with hurricanes. Florida, luckily, has been largely passed by, while the Carolinas and upper east coast are getting crushed. I am praying that Irene leaves them unscathed. Looks like a terrible storm. We have got the wind, surf and rain for 2 days now as the outskirts hit the Florida coast. Every place has something to contend with so let's pray for our friends on the East Coast this weekend!

Marco - 40 years since the last one in VA was what I heard.

Sally - They probably know about the tool. I would worry about people being at work, no one there to turn the tool.

Valerie - We do have earthquakes occasionally.  I think this is the 3rd or 4th larger earthquake that I remember since I moved to Ohio in 1986. I have never been aware of them until they talk about it on the news.   There is a fault in Ohio (?) or maybe I am confusing one west of us.

Diane -  I started blogging in 2005 as Katrina was bearing down on NO.  Or maybe it had hit already ??  I have to look at the date.  There is NOTHING on my blog... which was about Columbus, about what was going on in the news.  I was trying to divert my own attention.   I started writing it to stop obsessively looking at the news online.  My 6 year blogging anniversary is right about now? I do not feel the same horrible dread I remember in 2005... but then again maybe I am not paying attention to the news and weather.

Maureen,

Thanks for the re-blog. These wrenches are very common in Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay area.  I give them in a basket with other safety items to first-time homebuyers at closing.  Hopefully, we won't need to use them.
