An Essential Earthquake Country Tool
Did you feel the earthquake last week? I did NOT. I believe I was at home sitting at the computer when the earthquake happened. The first inkling I had was a friend in West Virginia saying something online. I looked then on Twitter and Facebook and saw people in Central Ohio saying they felt the earth move.
I turned on the TV and local news said buildings in downtown Columbus swayed when an earthquake occurred in Virginia and shook neighboring states... and their neighboring states. Us.
This is from a California real estate agent. Lloyd shared an "essential earthquake tool"... of course being in California he is in Earthquake Country. Let's just hope it's years before we feel another earthquake in Central Ohio. Or don't feel an earthquake as the case may be. Thanks Lloyd Binen in Earthquake Country (California) for allowing your post to be Re-Blogged. Thank God the tremor last week caused no damage here. Thank Goodness we are NOT in Earthquake Country...
Weather is local... an old, old post. Do you prefer tornadoes? Hurricanes? Earthquakes? Earthquakes and real estate are local too.
Wordless Wednesday; An Essential Earthquake Country Tool
The red tool is a gas meter wrench. It's positioned on the gas valve. The wrench has different sized openings to accommodate different size valves. When the wrench is pushed downward, the valve is rotated 90 degrees which stops the flow of natural gas into the house. Shutting off the gas prevents gas leaks and explosions from pipes ruptured during an earthquake.
Every homeowner in California, and perhaps elsewhere, should keep a gas meter wrench next to their gas meter in case an earthquake ruptures a gas line.

Recently, on large commercial buildings, I've noticed gas meters equipped with a seismic device which I believe automatically shuts off the gas flow if ground shaking is detected. That's a great idea because the occupants may not be present or able to manually shut the gas off. I haven't looked into their cost.
