Bergen County New Jersey Awaits Irene

Storm Warning

As I sit here awaiting the winds that will undoubtedly come later tonight I wonder what this evening is going to be like.

As of 5:30 it just started to rain in earnest a bit now as I am writing this.

I am getting a bit on edge now as I see reports coming in about the wind damage to North Carolina and what the wind has done.

I have secured about everything I can think of on my yard now and am hoping for the best.

So far no wind has hit here but I know it will be howling later tonight.

Flooding is also a concern of course as well.

We are expecting now from 5-12 inches of rain.

This will have a major impact on the area as we have been receiving rain all along this summer and our streams and brooks are already very high. The ground is quite saturated and the fear of trees coming down from the winds are very real.

Hopefully Irene will dissipate a bit as it seems to have taken a turn over land now.

Once it's back in the ocean it's any ones guess as to what will happen.

Hopefully it will stay no more than a cat 1 storm which will be bad enough.

So wish us luck tonight. I will keep reporting updates as long as my electricity holds out.
I don't have a generator so my fingers are crossed firmly.

Update
now @ 6:30 i
s that it may only be a tropical storm by the time it reaches us now...

Update now 7:15 and it's being downgraded with less winds... I hope this is true...

Update : It's now Sunday morning 11AM and the rain has stopped but the flooding is starting. The rivers have not crested yet so we are in for more fun apparently. Thankfully we are safe and no damage. It was pretty scary last night.

Update: 1:30 PM No more rain. Wind is still gusting but not too too bad. The water is rising down the street and will probably not crest for a few days. There was a warning this morning that our resevoir may breach so I am on the lookout for that. Check in later....

This is terrific news as the wind predictions are down now as well.... Woo Hooo

My camera batteries are all charged though so maybe I will get some video if it's not too dangerous out there.

I've got a feeling I wont be getting a lot of sleep tonight... Update: And I didn't....

See you all on the other side of this event.

Robert,  Living in south Florida, I have been through this before.  Stay away from any windows when you hear that wind start whipping up.  Designate a safe room, a room with no windows.  Even an interior bathroom will do.  Take some supplies in there in case you have to go quickly.

Stay safe!

Elyse - Just got up this morning and things are ok thankfully. Flooding is starting though so it's not over yet.
