City of Bridgeport Orders Mandatory Evacuations

By
Real Estate Agent with William Raveis Real Estate RES.0772823

The City met wtih the EOC and as of 4 PM evacuations of low lying areas are no longer voluntary, they are mandatory.  What this means is that the police are going door-to-door asking people to leave their homes.  They will not forcably remove anyone, but they will ask you for your next of kin info and inform you that emergency vehicles may not be able to reach you if you are in trouble.

MANDATORY EVACUATIONS

See map  http://ow.ly/6etSZ which is being used by the City to determine low lying areas.  You'll notice that this map combines Category I and Category 2 storm surges into one color code.  The previous map we posted separates them out and also has a more current date (2008 vs. 2004).  We don't know why the City chose the 2004 map over the 2008 map.

CHARGE YOUR CELL PHONES

Charge your cell phones and keep them charged.  If you have a charger that works in your car's cigarette lighter, use that after the power goes out to recharge your cell phone.  That is your lifeline to the police and your neighbors.

If you have left your home and want me to check on it after the storm, please call me at 203-521-0768.  That's my cell phone and I do have a full tank of gas and thus can keep my phone charged.  If you have an iPhone and need it charged after the storm and before the electricity comes back on, call me before your battery gets too low.

Hi Gail,

So sorry to hear about what's been going on all up and down the east coast. It must be nerve racking...many of us are praying and holding good thoughts for you all!

I hope, Irene would go away and won't hurt anybody in your area.

Gail - I'm in a mandatory evacuation area too.  Police came door to door to make sure we were informed.  We decided to stay in our house as did many of our neighbors but are prepared with enough food and supplies if we lose power.

Gail: Please let us know how you fared during this emergency. It's tough for us in the west to just watch it on TV and not be able to help somehow.

Gail - stay safe.  This is a great post and is important for folks to take these warnings seriously so that we have no loss of life.

Hi Gail - Stay dry and safe.  There have been mandatory evacuations just south of me along the Long Island Sound.  I'm staying in White Plains - though I toyed with staying with friends in Orange County.

Hi All, I had a client who wanted me to write up an offer just as the evacuations began. Can you believe it? I did it, but now have no electricity. We are fine, but only because we only had one hour of Category One winds before it became a tropical storm. I don't think I'll stay if this ever happens again. I'll put up photos so you can see the devastation as well as the way our community came together to help one another. I spent the day helping neighbors and that's why I stayed (also I wasn't in the storm surge area). What an experience! Thank you all for thinking of us!
