The CN Tower in Toronto is lit a bright orange tonight, in memory of Jack Layton, the Federal Leader of the opposition. He passed away on August 22nd, 2011 and the State funeral was held today.
I met Jack Layton, as a student at Ryerson, many years ago. He was one of those teachers, who I will remember all my life. One memory - is him taking all the students to City Council in the evening, and we sat there, like the councilors do ..... and we had a first-hand experience of what he was teaching. And there is a side story to this .... a homeless man, came and joined us.
As we walked from Ryerson to City Hall, Jack was giving us a little history of the places we were passing by ….. and that’s when the homeless man came over to talk to Jack. Instead of ignoring him, Jack included him as another student.

I visited Toronto couple of years ago and did visit the CN tower - but it looks more beautiful in orange....
Rosalind - Jack Layton left his mark on Toronto and in Ottawa - he may even have changed federal politics for some time to come. regardless of your political affiliations you had to respect the man and his principles
Praful, Thank you for commenting. Yes, the CN Tower is a beautiful structure and more so, when it is all lit up. The colours often, reflect what’s going on in the City of Toronto.
Rosalind: It sounds like that was a great tribute to Jack Layton that the folks in Toronto are showing him. And what a great thing it says about the politics in Canada... that you can honor someone from... "the opposition."
Here in the "lower 48"... so many of the clowns in Washington won't even TALK... to "the opposition." The United States could learn so much from our neighbor from the north.
I think it's really great that you have chosen to honor Mr Layton in a post. Good for you !
Kathy, you are right in saying so. He also impacted the ordinary people, who had the opportunity to interact with him on some level or other, even just meeting him in passing, at Tim Hortons.
Karen, even if we ignore the fact that he was an articulate politician, who took his Party, to the status of the Official Opposition, he was a special human being …. I guess, many people saw that in him.
