Irene Didn’t Ring the Doorbell. She Knocked the Door Down ~ Aftermath in Shelton CT

It’s almost over. I say ‘almost’ because the winds have just picked up again and I can ONLY hope that more trees don’t topple.

Unfortunately, for me, I have some serious cleanup issues to deal with. My property looks like a war zone.  Insurance adjuster is coming tomorrow.   I am looking out at a huge tree precariously hanging on my power lines. Please, let me keep my power!

I commented to my husband on Saturday morning to take a look at how nice the yard looked because it probably won’t look the same 24 hours from now.

My property and some of my neighborhood looks surreal.  I saw people taking pictures of my house and property earlier.  Yeah….I know…it looks pretty scary.

We will make our way out of it.  My neighbors who had a huge tree crash through their daughter’s bedroom (they were all safely sleeping on the lower level), and my other neighbor who had his power lines ripped from his house will survive.

Many of us were milling around our street today and commenting on each other’s mess. The consensus was:  No one was hurt.  We can all get this fixed. We can deal with the inconvenience.

There are MANY more in CT and other states affected by Hurricane Irene who are much worse off than we are. Some lost their lives. Our prayers are with them.  Others in CT  lost their homes into Long Island Sound.  Yes, their homes basically slid into the water. That is tragedy.  We pray for them and their losses.

I was dead set against going out today to survey Shelton CT.  Since there was so much traffic on my quiet dead end street, I just had to go out and take a look.

I found many downed trees --- many more just hanging on power lines.

I went to the Far Mill River and found three guys ‘tubing’ on their pool floats.  Hey, you guys, you really made me laugh as you saw me and yelled “ Yeah, Hurricane Irene’”  I hope they knew what was around the corner as the Far Mill River turned into Disney’s Roaring Rapids in a hurry.

Probably the most disturbing was seeing Indian Wells State Park completely under water. I was speechless.  I had never seen that before. Then that water ran down into the Maples in Shelton, a residential area on the Housatonic River.  I didn’t go into too far into the area, but from the outside,  it looked severely flooded.

There is a lot of cleanup to be done in the coming days and weeks. Personally, I have a LOT of work to do on my property.  But we are all safe and dry…..and we have power!   I hope it stays that way.  The wind is picking up quite a bit from Irene’s backlash. Just go away already. We had enough.

To all those affected by Hurricane Irene –

We will all get through this.  Like my neighbor said today.  We only lost things.  Our families are all fine and together.

Oh no Barbara.  I'm so sorry to hear that.  I do hope your power is okay and you can get everything back to normal soon.  I wish you were closer because I know someone here who does that sort of work.

Ww were lucky in my area.  Things are not so bad.  But, a bit south, there is a lot of lfooding and I got calls from a couple of my customers.

Barbara,

Thanks for the excellent report and we are all happy that you folks had no injuries to family and friends. Has you folks said the damage was all material items which can be replaced and human life can not. Good luck with the clean up. Here is Houston area we know what it is like all too well after IKE hit here 2 years ago or maybe 3 years ago..

Bob - We managed to get some clean up today.  What a mess! Still more to follow.  We'll  be back to normal soon enough.  Putting it all in perspective, there are many, many more way worse off than us.

George -- I think we took the hit for you!  Glad you came away unscathed.

Connie -- Those trees are (were) indeed a big part of our landscape.  We still have plenty to spare, though.  I live on a heavily wooded lot which I wouldn't have any other way; but it's times like these where it can be a bit dangerous. None of the trees came close to our house.

Hi Barbara, We were thinking of you when we heard Irene was traveling to CT. Although the cleanup will take some time, like you say, things were lost and not people ~ Looking at your damages, you were so lucky to have not lost your power. Besides a little flooding, the biggest problem for us was not having phone service and no electric. Glad that you and yours are fine and safe!

Hi Barbara - This is my first time online because we booked a hotel room!  Your area looks horrible and yet you have power.  Ours looks better but we probably won't get power til Friday!  I'm glad everyone is OK and you are right--that's the most important thing.

Hi Barbara,

I still can not believe all the damage you folks received from the rain fall. It goes to show you that flowing water is very powerful force in nature. I hope you are making a little progress with the clean up effort. It will take awhile and it is best to be patient.

Thank you for commenting on my band blog. High School band playing Led Zep is to me unbelievable and very cool. I bet this group could play Heartbreaker and Whole Lotta Love. As you know all Led Zep music is difficult at best. Take care and have a great day if possible.

Larry & Sheila -- Thanks for thinking of me. We're still working through the mess. Had some really great dedicated support and help from our neighbors.  Fortunately, we have power.  Most of my friends and relatives still do not.  We consider ourselves lucky.  Glad to hear you're back to normal and safe.

Peggy -- Our hotels are filled around here as well. So sorry you had to resort to that, but thankful you're safe and sound.   Maybe you'll be restored sooned than predicted.  We're getting back to normal.  I can actually see out my front windows now. No more fallen trees blocking my view.  It was one hot mess.

Bob -- We made a lot of progress today. It's looking much cleaner now.  A little more tomorrow and we should be back.  On the band, yes, I think Whole Lotta Love would be a stretch but Heartbreaker might be do-able.  LOL!  Thanks for checking up on me!

Well the good news was nobody got hurt, a few weeks and we will all be back to normal like it never happened. Plenty of fire wood for the winter though.

Barb, glad you made it through okay.  Sorry to hear about all the damage.  We are on a flash flood alert today and tomorrow because of all the rain.  I imagine you are too over there.
