Irene Didn’t Ring the Doorbell. She Knocked the Door Down ~ Aftermath in Shelton CT
It’s almost over. I say ‘almost’ because the winds have just picked up again and I can ONLY hope that more trees don’t topple.
Unfortunately, for me, I have some serious cleanup issues to deal with. My property looks like a war zone. Insurance adjuster is coming tomorrow. I am looking out at a huge tree precariously hanging on my power lines. Please, let me keep my power!
I commented to my husband on Saturday morning to take a look at how nice the yard looked because it probably won’t look the same 24 hours from now.
My property and some of my neighborhood looks surreal. I saw people taking pictures of my house and property earlier. Yeah….I know…it looks pretty scary.
We will make our way out of it. My neighbors who had a huge tree crash through their daughter’s bedroom (they were all safely sleeping on the lower level), and my other neighbor who had his power lines ripped from his house will survive.
Many of us were milling around our street today and commenting on each other’s mess. The consensus was: No one was hurt. We can all get this fixed. We can deal with the inconvenience.
There are MANY more in CT and other states affected by Hurricane Irene who are much worse off than we are. Some lost their lives. Our prayers are with them. Others in CT lost their homes into Long Island Sound. Yes, their homes basically slid into the water. That is tragedy. We pray for them and their losses.
I was dead set against going out today to survey Shelton CT. Since there was so much traffic on my quiet dead end street, I just had to go out and take a look.
I found many downed trees --- many more just hanging on power lines.
I went to the Far Mill River and found three guys ‘tubing’ on their pool floats. Hey, you guys, you really made me laugh as you saw me and yelled “ Yeah, Hurricane Irene’” I hope they knew what was around the corner as the Far Mill River turned into Disney’s Roaring Rapids in a hurry.
Probably the most disturbing was seeing Indian Wells State Park completely under water. I was speechless. I had never seen that before. Then that water ran down into the Maples in Shelton, a residential area on the Housatonic River. I didn’t go into too far into the area, but from the outside, it looked severely flooded.
There is a lot of cleanup to be done in the coming days and weeks. Personally, I have a LOT of work to do on my property. But we are all safe and dry…..and we have power! I hope it stays that way. The wind is picking up quite a bit from Irene’s backlash. Just go away already. We had enough.
To all those affected by Hurricane Irene –
We will all get through this. Like my neighbor said today. We only lost things. Our families are all fine and together.
