Do You HONK or MOO? Standing Out in the Crowd

Do You Honk or Moo?

Are you standing out in the crowd?

Are YOU standing out in the crowd? And for the right reasons?

It's a crowded real estate world out there. There's lots of competition.

So are you one of the crowd or are you able to stand out?

Most of us no doubt want to stand out, and for the right reasons, not because we do a lousy job, are incompetent, provide crummy service or other negatives that make consumers to want to steer clear.

And with the market being what it is, and the not-so-stellar- rep our industry has, it may not be easy to stand out. Don't we often hear that REALTORS are all alike, or something to that effect?

While that's clearly NOT true, the point is that it CAN be hard to stand out in the crowd if you are like everyone else, and you probably have to step outside your comfort zone to do it, or perhaps do something other than the ordinary.

The sad thing is that given how much mediocrity we see, just doing your job reasonably well can make you stand out. But let me suggest some areas where you CAN stand out, should you choose to do so.

Services you provide to clients - provide something unique or special

Customer Service - make buyers and sellers Remember you for this; anticipate needs and questions, do what you say you are going to do; under-promise and over-deliver

Communication - poor communication is one of the biggest complaints consumers have about REALTORS, so make sure you communicate regularly and clearly

Create and Implement Systems that work

Marketing (on-line and in print) - just being here sets you apart from the crowd

Market and Area Knowledge

Continue to grow and learn through classes and webinars

USP - Unique Selling Proposition - what's yours?

So what IS your point of difference? And how ARE you standing out in the crowd. Care to share?

Okay, it would have been easy to take the smart Aleck route and say I moo since I'm from WI, but I hear your cows in CA are much happier!  ;-).  But, I've never been about the easy route.  What sets me apart fromt he other stagers in my area, professionalism, knowledge base, SEO. menu of services, extensive list of trusted contractors & Realtors and other Real Estate professionals, but most importantly is customer service that can't be beat!

Jeff, outstanding analogy! I just had to lean on that button!

Mediocrity today is an epidemic and one we aren't paying attention to.  Love your list of suggestions on just how to break out of the crowd!

Jeff, there is so little real competition out there that is easy to stand out by just not being mediocre. Work hard, provide customer service, be knowledge and communicate with your clients.. Voila.

Great post.

Pamela - thanks a bunch. Hopefully it wll generate some ideas for those who are not yet standing out. And, it seems, we need to cotninue to tweak what we do and how as the market, and consumer behavior, changes.

Patty - sad to say that seems to be true. Just do a decent job and you stand out.

Hannah - what a nice compliment. And I bet you will stand out in YOUR area as a result.

Jeff you are absolutely right, we need to stand out, but for all the right reasons that you mentioned, and not the ones that we hear about in the media.

Hi Jeff, A great summation and certainly one that we each need to verify point by point that we have mastered or have the knowledge and commitment to assign to someone that does.

Jeff,

Whether we discover our USP or create one it works best when it is something we are passionate about.

George - sadly there are some who do stick out for the wrong reasons...and we often know who they are. And they give us all a bad name.

William - well hopefully they will at least give some folks some things to ponder.

Steve - as you should be.

But a moo....well thats a sound that tells me theres something peaceful and good out there. So....I am mooing along quite nicely thank you and people are tuning in. Doesnt hurt that I have some awesome customer service that goes along with that moo. LOL. Great points Jeff and something we all need to stay aware of and on top of. Jeff - Communication is one of the biggest complaints I have about Realtors too.  I pride myself on my communication, which I know has set me apart from a lot of other agents in the area.
