Aren’t “improvements” supposed to make your life easier?

A CLASSIC CASE OF "PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE".

Thank you Richard.  Red Flag

I cannot count the times that I have evaluated new equipment, new systems, new widgets, etc., and come to the conclusion that ~ ~ ~

"Thanks, but I just don't NEED it".

I'm not a Luddite.  I'm not even a fuddy-duddy (my children are fuddy-duddies).

I just don't want to buy things that I don't need for my business.

HINT!! If the vendor contacts YOU, you probably don't need what they're selling.  If you want a new system or gadget, go to the Internet and research first, then contact vendors yourself.

Aren’t “improvements” supposed to make your life easier? The more dependent we become on technology, the more we are forced to suffer through countless upgrades and “improvements.

In most cases, we like things just the way they are and then for some inexplicable reason our product or service is “upgraded” and we either lose some functionality or we have to waste a considerable amount of time adjusting to the changes.

And in the worst case scenario the upgrade simply cases our technology to NOT work at all … at least until a new “fix” is concocted.

I once paid a hundred dollars for a security system upgrade only to later discover that many of the features that I had come to depend on were NOT included in the product. So I actually paid good money to get an inferior product.

My guess is the IT developers must justify their positions by constantly coming up with “something.”

Whether or not that “something” is useful or beneficial doesn’t seem to matter.

Lenn, I've found AR to be the perfect place for me to assess what would be a good addition to our business.  If something doesn't work, it'll get flushed by the folks here quickly enough :)

Lenn -Thanks for your comments - I have found that most things that  are "sold" to us are not as good as they are "sold" to be.    I agree with Liz and Bill about - check it out on AR first!  Thanks for the reblog...

That is so true, Lenn- when the vendor calls you, it is usually something that you don't want, need or are looking for!

I have had systems that worked just fine thank you very much. But then new software that I need comes out and cannot run on my operating system so I end up upgrading

Dagny.  Absolutely.  We have a fabulous resource right here.

Jennifer.  That's been my experience.

Charlie.  I've had the same experience.  GEEZ!  Adobe wouldn't run on my new OS.

Lenn

That is sound advice, not buy it unless you need and know how to use it.

Good luck and success.

Hi Lenn, That is some Sage advise. I think today, the reverse thing happens way to much. Someone introduces an idea, innovation, product, service or what have you and then the marketing gurus try to help find a way for you to use it, showing you all the need that you didn't know you have. ( And if one is honest, if there was a need , you should have already had  the right system or product in place -chances are, it is a made up need anyway and the new thing will likely add to more needs down the road when it doesn't work, hehehe).

Lou.  And that doesn't leave much.

William.  Absolutely right.  I remember a software salesman asking me how to mass-email, aka spam.  I said, You're not going to get that from me (this was back in the days when few knew how to e-mail).

He said, "They won't mind if it's something they want".

Who gets to decide????

Lenn - I used to work for a company that had a lot of home grown "productivity" enhancing systems. When I pointed out the many of their tasks for managers actually made life more difficult and took more time than the manual activity they were supposed to have displaced I was always told they would be in the next fix. The "next fix" unfortunately never came because there were never any maintenance updates, just "feature" updates.

I have always contended that the tool is slave to man, but too many application developers seem to have the opposite opinion.

Mike.  I'm laughing out loud.  Happens to social networks too.  New widgets and features on a slow and inneficient platform.
