Sports Illustrated Preseason High School Poll Ranks Katy Tigers in Katy Texas Number 14 in Nation
Katy High School in Katy Texas is the oldest of the 6 high schools served by the Katy Independent School District (KISD) and has a long tradition of high school football excellence. This year, certainly to no one who lives in the area surprise, the preseason high school football poll ranks the Katy Tigers number 14 in the entire nation. The local area sports district being 19-5A where Katy High school plays its regular season schedule is loaded with excellent teams and coaches. The Texas Education Agency ranks the Katy ISD as a “Recognized” district per their rating methods.
I need to review the Katy ISD system briefly so everyone gets an understanding of this school district. Katy ISD encompasses an area of approximately 181 square miles. The student total enrollment for 2011-2012 school year will exceed 60,000 students and includes 53 separate schools. As previously mentioned there are 6 high schools served by this area. All 6 Katy High Schools play sports in District 19-5A. In addition District 19-5A also includes Memorial High School and Strake Jesuit High School. The District sports schedule is brutal each week as there are no easy games for any team. My Step-son attends Seven Lakes High School and he plays on the Varsity Football Team. The football parents are optimistic that hopefully the Seven Lakes Spartans will reach the State playoffs this year. Seven Lakes did win its first game of year 24-21 in a squeaker.
Katy High School has won six State of Texas Football Championships being 1959, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2007 and 2008. Katy lost in the State Championship game played in San Antonio in 2009 and was upset in the quarter finals of the State championship last year by Pearland who I believe won the State Championship. We went to the game back in 2009 in San Antonio and rooted for the Katy Tigers. Texas holds a State Championship in football by having a real State playoff system. The playoffs match teams of essentially the same size of enrollment against one another. Truly in Texas the State Champion in each bracket is number 1 unlike in College Football with all of BCS mathematical nonsense of deciding who should play who for the national title.
All of us that live in the area at first certainly will root for the Team where their children attend or attended. When it is playoff time in November a lot of us in the area will root for local area favorites such as the Katy Tigers. I personally predict the Katy Tigers will be back in the State Championship game playing for the State title once again. What a great program. Katy Tigers beat North Shore last Friday August 26, 2011 34-6 as their defense totally dominated the game. North Shore by the way usually has an excellent and talented team.
I also expect Memorial to have an excellent season this year and they will go deep into the playoffs. Memorial has many skilled players back from last year’s team that did go very deep into the playoffs before losing.
I want to express thanks to Dan Edward Phillips for sending me the preseason poll information and suggesting I write a blog. Check out Dan’s blog and subscribe to it as you can’t go wrong. I read his blog every day.
