Part V - Moving - the pets and children

As much as I dislike moving furniture, clothes, books and all the other inanimate objects, they are really a piece  of cake compared to the live, wiggly things that must be transported from point A to point B. Wish I could beam them up  Scotty- Star Trek technology would be such a Good thing. But reality is that we must use mundane techniques to accomplish our goal.

To many people, pets are like children, so it is no wonder they are so concerned about moving their pets to their new home. When moving pets, it is important to keep the pet's routine as regular has possible.  This applies to four legged, two legged (birds), aquatic and amphibian pets. Take your pet to the vet and make sure their shots are up to date. Get copies of their medical records and refill their prescriptions. Have some sort of Identification with your pet at all times. Take a picture of the pet and write up a description of it and put the write up in a safe place. If your pet is going to eat while being transported, make sure the food is plain and the water is from your old home. When animals eat or drink new things, their stomachs may become upset. Transport your animals in insulated cases if possible to protect them from changes in temperature. If moving to another state, check with your vet about any laws that the new state may have that would affect transporting your pet to your new home.

Moving can be a traumatic experience for children. After all, they are not the ones that decided to move. Helping your kids cope with the move involves conscience planning.  While this is an exciting time, it is also very scary for children. They are leaving behind their friends and everything that is familiar. They have to start over just like you by making new friends, adjusting to new surroundings, and going to a new school. Many of them are still learning how to socialize. Listen to their concerns. Don't forget about your children during this hectic period.  The more involved they are in every aspect of the move, the easier the transition may be.

Do you have any tricks that you discovered during your last move that might help one of us to deal more effectively with our children and pets during a move? Please share them with us.  I am looking forward to your comments. Any funny antedotes?
